r52 audio driver

#1 Post by ckaufman » Wed Jul 28, 2010 2:15 pm

Hi
I am trying to install wxp drivers on a new hard drive,
I have downloaded what the driver matrix tells me is
the latest version: 1ya210ww.exe. I extract it and
run the setup.exe, that it then puts into drivers\win\audio,
and that proceeds to install the ULTRANAV! drivers.
It says nothing about audio except that there is
one file named aeaudio.sys in \drivers\audio.
All the other identifiable files in that directory are synaptics
related.
The pointer and the touchpad work as expected but there's
no sound.
Thanks
Chuck

Hi Chuck. Have you tried letting Windows updates find the driver for you? My sisters R52 recently had a reinstall done and I'm pretty sure Windows found the drivers and installed it on her R52.

Edit:

left out some detail.

Hi E.G.
Thanks. I'll try that but why does the Lenovo site provide the
apparantly wrong driver?

The other alternative would be to load System Update and let it find the drivers that it needs.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

Obviously something went very wrong, and I don't see what. I just downloaded and expanded the 1ya210ww.exe file into a test directory from the Lenovo site and it was indeed the SoundMax files. Here is the directory listing:
  • Directory of C:\Test
    07/29/2010 04:25 AM 8,150,104 1ya210ww.exe
    04/22/2002 11:40 AM 45,056 ADMINCHK.DLL
    06/19/2002 01:26 PM 40,960 AEENABLE.EXE
    03/24/2005 08:28 PM 17 AUDIO.TPI

    02/11/2005 02:31 PM 437,812 SETUP.IBT
    02/11/2005 02:08 PM 415 SETUP.INI
    02/11/2005 02:31 PM 396,200 SETUP.INX

    07/29/2010 04:30 AM <DIR> SMAXWDM
    04/21/2005 05:44 PM 221 SMOPT.INI
    07/29/2010 04:30 AM <DIR> SM_COMN
    07/29/2010 04:30 AM <DIR> SM_MICRO
    07/29/2010 04:30 AM <DIR> SM_PANEL
    07/29/2010 04:30 AM <DIR> SM_PNP
    07/29/2010 04:30 AM <DIR> SM_POWER
    07/29/2010 04:30 AM <DIR> SYS
    02/11/2005 02:08 PM 308,278 WIN256_3.BMP
All those SM files are SoundMax files, the .bmp is the SoundMax logo, and the Readme even begins:

Analog Devices Inc. SoundMAX(R) Readme
INSTALLATION AND REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS:
Installation or Update of Analog Devices SoundMAX
NOTE: Remove any previously installed driver using the instructions
in the next section.

So I would suggest trying it again from Lenovo at
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-58599
Where I just got it.

Mike

Thanks for looking into this. I did what you suggested, which I thought
was the same thing (maybe, but probably not, since
it worked this time) I did five times yesterday, but this time the
drivers are installed and sound works.

The files that were all synaptic-related are in \drivers\audio\,
and the soundmax files are in \drivers\win\audio\, which was not there yesterday.
What I probably did was to go into \drivers\audio\ and run the setup that is
there, not the setup in \drivers\win\audio.

Why are the touchpad drivers in a directory called audio?
Probably something else I did wrong, but not apparently causing harm.

Before you replied I tried windows update as suggested, but it couldn't find
drivers.

Hey, I had no idea I was helping a fellow Rhode Islander. Good to see you here.

Anyway, I have some good news to report. You aren't going crazy, and you didn't mess things up somehow. I just checked my own directory of C:\DRIVERS\AUDIO, which as we found is not the one the SM driver files you needed were in.

You're absolutely right! The Synaptic files are there, just as you described. So IBM did do this on purpose for some reason.
