T43 New Power Adapter Needed ?? Where?

#1 Post by CallDon » Sun Aug 01, 2010 6:57 pm

My AC adapter had given up the ghosts and the cable is broken at the adapter. So, I need a new power adapter. I tried out a couple from Frys but could not get them to work. Lenova did not seem to offer one for the T43. So where do I find one??

I am going out of town and will have to be without my trusty T43! :( Unless I can find one locally, which is probably impossible at this point!

Thanks

You're going to need a 16VDC, AC adapter that supplies a minimum of 4.5 amps (i.e., 72 watts), with a 2.5mm inside diameter (ID) and 5.5mm outside diameter (OD) coaxial plug. Furthermore, the plug must have the positive voltage assigned to the center (hole) of the plug. Universal supplies should have the capability to change the voltage being provided and the polarity of the plug. I couldn't find one by randomly looking through Fry's online product listing that matches what the Thinkpad needs, but based on what I see there, you probably don't want to spend $100 for one as the link provided by Harry shows you can get one from Lenovo for $13 (plus shipping and tax).

I tried a couple that were the correct "everything" including voltage, plug, etc. But my T43 did not react at all. So I ordered the adapter above.

Got it today. Plugged it in. Nothing. No lights, no led light on the computer letting me know that it is plugged in. Nothing. I get nothing.

What could it be? Is there a breaker fuse in the computer or something like that?

There are several fuses on the T4x motherboard. You can download a fuse map prepared by one of our members here:

You will need a multimeter (ohmmeter), some good eyes and steady hands. The Hardware Maintenance Manual can help with taking the system apart:

Well, I gave up and took in in for repair. Replaced the motherboard. I picked it up this afternoon.

Took it home, plugged it in and have been on it for around two hours. Tonight, I am sitting here, enjoying my T43. Ya know, it's like 'going home again' to have your comfortable desktop with the icons and stuff right in front of you.

I figured a couple of hours was enough to charge the battery for a few minutes unplugged. So I decided to un-plug it and take it over to my desk, to do some work on the other computer while also looking up some referrences on this one. Sat up in the chair, unplugged the adapter from the back of it. Instead of automatically switching to the battery, it immediately DIED!

WTF?!?

Plugged it back in and it booted right up. But the battery did not charge at all, or switch over when unplugged. So I tried it again. Battery is not charging at all.

Any suggestions?? They replaced the motherboard. What could it be now?

Assuming that you still have a good battery (one that accepts and holds a charge), my guess would be that the replacement motherboard has a blown fuse or some other problem with the battery charging circuitry. If you are running Windows, there should at least be a battery icon down in the system tray. You can also download the Power Management utility:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-58597

(Scroll down to the Power Management section)

Looks like the battery is shot. I took it back into the repair shop. The battery was not charging, as I said. So we tried a battery from another Thinkpad they had. Worked great. Looks like the spark or short that caused the mb to fail also caused the battery to fail.

So I have ordered a new battery and am waiting for the world to begin spinning again on Wednesday when the battery arrives.
