(Reuse) of WiFi card from R52 / other

#1 Post by jwege » Wed Aug 04, 2010 4:47 am

Hi,

since this forum has solved some issues for me (thank 100 times for that), I have another question:

Is there any cross-ref table to read which WiFi miniport card works with which TP model?

I have various older Models (T42, R52, R40, R31, R32) and some Models in which I do not need the wireless, so I could potetially swap the adaptors to get a better usage (g and WPA) for the ones i use frequently.

Here are the ones I do not use / need anymore:

R52 holding a "Intel Pro/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection"
Card: Intel but with a Dell Partsnumber P/N0W9764 which I was told should work in a IBM TP

I want to have the upgrade to this TP's:
T42 2373-Y8N which holds a Intel Pro/Wireless LAN2100 3B Mini PCI Adaptor
R40 2722-CDG which holds a Intel Pro/Wireless LAN2100 3B Mini PCI Adaptor also
R31 2656-6FG which holds a High Rate Wireless LAN MiniPCI Combo Card (Actiontec)

Any help on what to use where and which drivers I need?

Thanks in advance
Juergen

There are only 2 type slots used in TPs:
- MiniPCI in any Thinkpad below the R6x / T6x / X6x /Z6x series
- MiniPCIexpress in the R6x / T6x / X6x /Z6x series and newer.
See picture for the difference.

You can put the unused wifi card from the R52 in any of the other models.
You need to load the drivers from either IBM/Lenovo (D/L from each model's driver matrix page) or get the general one from Intel.
The laptop may give an error 1802, which can be easily fixed by applying the common no-1802 hack.
(T43/R52 and higher need a modified BIOS instead for non-approved wifi cards).
Umpteen posts about that.

The R31 will loose it's modem if you insert any other wifi card.

Sorry to respond only that late.

Thanks for the information. Very helpful!

I will hope to find some time in the next days to check out the R52 card in my T42. The drivers i will download from Lenovo.

Any quote on the chance to use this card:

Intel but with a Dell Partsnumber P/N0W9764

in a TP (I was told it should work in a IBM TP)

Thanks so much!

If that is a miniPCI card, it should work, but you may have to install Dell or Intel drivers.
I run a number of Dell wifi cards in my T23 machines, using Dell drivers without any problems.
if 1802 error, see my remark above.

Well, I tried out:

- installed Dell Card in T42 --> 1802 error
- "installed" no-1802 --> no errors
- installed driver from Intel website --> Win recognizes card & works under windows' organisation.

BUT:
Seems that IBM Access Connections dos not support the Dell card? Whenever I try to use AC, it does not connect and when I get the Diagnose, it says that there is a wrong driver installed. Error Code 40.

Tried to install the driver from the Lenovo Website, but with no luck (driver from intel seems to be newer).

Any comments on that?

Access Connections usually doesn't work with non-approved cards.

Think I screwd up my system completely and want to start from scratch.

But whenever I insert the WiFi card again (now the one from the R52) the system remembers the old setup (no way to go thru the setup steps again or tell the system what drivers to install) and uses the installed drivers again.

I did "deactivate" and "deinstall" and even deleted the files show from thy Windows/system32/drivers etc but they will be there again and again.

How can I uninstall the whole WiFi (totally without remembering anything) so I can install newly from scratch?

Hope you can help me ...

Thanks

Go to Device Manager, select the wifi card, rightclick on it, and first hit disable, then uninstall, then update driver (pointing to your new driver-source).

finally I was successful ... half at least:

Hve installed the Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection card from the R52 into the T42.

Have installed the other drivers (PM driver 1.52 and also Hotkey-Feature) according to the instructions of the text when of the 9.0.4.37 version of the "Intel Wireless LAN (11abgn, abg, bg)".

Does not work though. Symptoms:

1.) in the device manager, selecting the network crd nd going ti the "advanced tab", I see the Hardware-Version 1.15 BUT NO MC ADDRESS!

2.) in the device manager, at the ThinkPad PM Device, there is a ! an the status is "not started" due to error Code 19 ...

3.) When running Access Connections setting up a new profile, on the second page pressing "search network" (or wifi - have a German surface), it says that the wirless is switched off and if it should switched on. Then, no networks found. Pressing "search again" brings up the same message and that's it ...

4.) If I go to "Network connections", choose the Wifi and in the properties, I check "Use Windows for Konfiguration", Windows says it has found a wifi. After entering the key, the box appears where the network is highlighted in blue saying that is is connected but abobe the yellow bars on the right hand, it says "not connected"

very strange.

What can I do?
any help highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

additional information:

In the Network Access Point, I can see the mac address, so, the wireless card obviously works and make a connection.

Once I do set a fixed IP, i can even browse and using ipconfig /all, I have the adaptor shown.

I am totally confused!

I have started new (with a clone of the unchnged, old setup with the original WiFiCard).

Now, I have installed the drivers and afterwards, I have installed the wifi card (the "Intel Pro/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection")

I have renamed tht "LIBEAY32.DLL".

I can use the adaptor with Windows managing the card but (fully functional with WPA encryption).

But once I tick that off and try to use Access Connections, the card is recognized (is in the options when setting up a new connection) but I have no entry in the "3. Mode for wireless connections" (802.xx) nor do I have any entry availble in the "4. Securitytype" field on the right upper corner.

So, the networkcard obviously does not work with AC ... or vice versa.

Any help what I could try additionally?

Thanks so much!

I think it's obvious!
Uninstall AC, like so many others here...

Hmm.

To be honest: I like Ac pretty much because I have so many different Setup's and AC gives me the tool to choose what I need in different locations and I I want to have wifi & lan parallel or wifi only etc.

Also, I like the WiFi Search-Capability of AC.

Is there any other comparable program out there offfering the sam features but is not that problematic to the WiFi card than AC (on XP)?

Thanks
