You might find this funny (LG phone story)

#1 Post by mediasponge » Fri Aug 06, 2010 6:12 pm

We got a family plan deal on the LG GR500 Xenon phones last year. For a phone that's not a true smartphone, it's got everything I need. We got 4 of them. My wife has had nothing but trouble with hers. Twice during the warranty period, hers acted up and she got it exchanged. The problem is the nice slide-out QWERTY keyboard. At first, she didn't think she would be texting much. Now she loves it. The problem is, the phone would not switch into "landscape" mode and recognize the QWERTY keyboard when she slid it out. It's been driving her nuts. Having to go back to the "stone age" of texting is very annoying when you have a full keyboard.

OK, the phones are out of warranty, so I say, "Let's open it up." A few teardown vids on YouTube later, and I have her unit all apart on the workbench (after moving the ailing A31p out of the way). The way it senses that the keyboard is out is a tiny permanent magnet in one of the plastic panels. The motherboard has a sensor. When the two move apart, it's supposed to switch over. There's nothing else obviously wrong with the phone, so I reassemble it. Doggone if it isn't still doing the same thing where it won't switch after sliding out the keyboard. That is, until I discovered the secret handshake. If I open it slowly about 1/4 inch, then it switches every time, and I can open it the rest of the way and it's in the correct mode. Appears to work every time.

So, the bottom line is, "You're holding it wrong."
