8GB RAM fit in the W500 - And is it better than stock?

Yes, those will work. I don't think there's much of a difference in memory these days. buy the least expensive and it usually works.

I have upgraded my W500 to 8GB. Works fine.

I used these from SuperBiiz (ewiz)

Samsung DDR3-1333 SODIMM 4GB Original Notebook Memory D3-13S4GS1 $118.98 each (when I got them)

Don't notice much improvement. Hibernate sure takes a long time though
