Again international warranty

#1 Post by bapou » Tue Mar 08, 2005 6:18 pm

Hello,

In the moment I try to buy a X40 2371-97U notebook directly from IBM.
This model has a Limited warranty 3years/1 year battery EasyServ

I asked the sales representative if the warranty is international and will be valid when I'm back in Germany and he told me that this is not the case and I have to buy the extension 3YR TPP GLOBAL MODELS PLUS for $152.10.

In this forum I often read that all the IBM warranties are international, therefore I called another guy at IBM . He also told me that the 3year warranty which comes with the X40 2371-97U is only valid in the US.

Should I believe IBM and do I have to buy the extra international warranty ?

I would be happy to get an answer soon because I would like to place the order as soon as possible.

Thank you very much.

Thomas

P.S.: It is worth to call the sales representative more than one time. The second quote I got was $600 cheaper.

Thomas,

See: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-54264

The sales reps are wrong AFAIK, but it would probably be best if you were to call back and ask to speak to a supervisor.

Dear James,

Thank you for the link to the IBM document.
It seems that the warranty is really limited to the US.

In the document in part 1 I found the following:
"Unless IBM specifies otherwise, these warranties apply only in the country or region in which you purchased the Machine."

I called IBM-Germany and they also told me that I have to buy an international extension.

Now I will ask the sale rep. if I can add the international extension later.
So I could check IBM-Germany with the serial number again before I buy the extension.

If anybody knows more about the warranty question I would be happy to hear from you.

Thomas

A guy at "IBM Czech" told me service is international and although I have 1 year limited warranty, he said there is no problem to apply 3 years common in Czech.

My friend has "LOCATION: United states" in warranty status, he had troubles and IBM Czech repaired it under warranty (motherboard change) without any problems.

one note, the 3-Yr ThinkPad Protection for Global Model Plus Machine is a type of insurance only. It means when your IBM is somehow destructed. When you spoil a liquid there etc.

It is not a standard warranty. I think guys in Germany are wrong. I do not know if they wash their hands in Germany or the guys in Czech are the best. But the fact is that my friend has his T40 repaired.

The warranty coverage IS worldwide. The only exception to that rule is typically with country specific HelpWare upgrades. For example if I bought a HelpWare upgrade to onsite for my X40, that onsite would only be valid in Canada, but the base warranty would be anywhere in the world.

Thank you very much for your help.

Now I ordered a quote without this special protection packet.
When the X40 is arrived I still have 30 days to check more details with IBM Germany using my serial number,

Best regards,

Thomas

Click here http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/support/ma ... arranties/ to warranty lookup, if status is still "in warranty" then German guys from IBM must repair your machine.

Based on my experience with this X20, I don't see a need to purchase any extended or additional warranty.
