X41 Tablet Durability

#1 Post by Bibin » Tue Aug 10, 2010 5:41 pm

Just thought I'd share a scary story - when at work an idiotic colleague, while holding my thinkpad and walking, tripped, and flung the thing out the window. It landed onto construction scaffolding 1 story below, which it then fell off about ~12 feet to the pavement below. I was scared to even look at it until I realised the lights were on, the SSD had proved its worth, and when I opened it it was perfectly fine. Some nasty scratches on the corner and a slight crack in the battery plastic but apart from that it's perfect!

Anyone else have some stories about the durability of these things? I've been a little paranoid after I just got the tablet and I'm wondering how they've been for everyone.

As the Navy Seals go.. Boo Yaah! ... X41T is quite the GI Jane :)
Wish you guys had taken some post-incident pictures.. of the laptop & the site: The Window, the scaffolding, the pavement and the height of the fall.. showing all of the above.. :) Maybe add / show a trajectory :)

Great story.

You know those picnic benches and tables a lot people have?

Kind of like this:

However the old school version where the benches are not attached to the table.

I had my X41T sitting on the table when my friend sat on the end of the bench. The bench flipped up and one end of it landed on the table.

On my open X41T. Right on the palm rest. Man my heart stopped. I thought the worst. My laptop flipped over after the impact and tumbled to the ground, lid open. I looked at my friend and asked him if he was alright, then with a lump in my throat, walked over to inspect the damage.

There is a scratch on the palm rest. Kind of reddish colored which I will attempt to buff out. Other than that, no signs of recent trauma anywhere. The system was up and running playing a video and video playback was still going on when I picked it up. I know had this been an Acer it would have been toast, so thank you IBM. Thank you for doing things right.

 Wow, I may need a crowbar to un-stick my jaw from the floor below. That has to be the worst laptop horror story I have ever heard, and it lived! If you had any doubts about it's legitness, forget them.

That be great. Also a pic of the room, the window & pavement where it fell... be a nice visual story.
