New W510, 12GB ram reports as 6GB (except in CPU-Z)

#1 Post by manamana » Wed Aug 11, 2010 12:24 pm

my W510 was delivered today, I got the recovery disks burned and then set about the ram and SSD upgrades.

It came with a single 2GB, I added 2x4 GB GSkill http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product

and another 2GB PNY http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820178241

For a total of 12GB. I followed this http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-75886

and moved the stock 2GB to slot 2, put the 4GB sodimms in 0 & 1, and the PNY in slot 3

According to the BIOS, I have 12GB,
According to CPU-Z, I have 12GB running in dual channel mode
According to Everest, I have 6GB
According to windows resource manager, I have 6GB.

Edit: everest reports that slots 2 & 4 are "not installed" I assume that maps to 1&3 on the lenovo guide?

Edit 2: swapped the sticks on the bottom of the laptop, now everything reports 12GB. But CPU-Z still says dual channel. Also noticed that the slot #s on the mainboard don't match lenovo's guide. What? That's just sloppy.

Edit 3: HWinfo also says dual channel. But I have no idea if that is true or not.

Anybody have any idea what's going on?

Are you running Windows 7 64 bit?

Yes

I swapped the sticks on the bottom back to their original config, this time everything shows 12GB across the board. Very odd. original problem seems to be gone.

Now it's just figuring out dual channel.

Windows experience index comes up with a memory score of 7.2 for both configs, will now try grouping similiar modules on both sides of the system board to see if I can come up with some evidence for what's dual channel and what isn't.

Perhaps Lenovo tech support will give you some more input if you don't find it here.

Good luck...

Identical memory scores no matter what the configuration.

Has anybody figured out dual channel configurations for the W510?

so now what is the best condition to get dual channel with 12GB ? where you put the 4GB dimms and where you put the 2GB dimms ?

another question mixing size and vendors doesn't affect the dual channel functionality ?!!

please help because i will do the same upgrade ?
