Suggestions for replacement HDD IBM ThinkPad z60M

#1 Post by Matthew A. » Wed Aug 11, 2010 12:43 pm

Hi, I'm looking to upgrade my HDD.

Currently:
Hitachi Travelstar 5K100 60GB SATA (OEM shipped with z60M) 5400rpm 8mb buffer.

Considering:
Hitachi Travelstar 7K320 320GB SATA 7200rpm 16MB buffer from newegg.ca for CAD55.

Do you think the increased speed and power consumption would cause heating/stability issues in this unit?

Any opinions?

Thank you for your help,

Matthew

You might take a look at a solid state drive. I have one each
installed in two old Z61p laptops and SSD really gave 'em a
new lease on life. VERY fast. No comparison before/after.

Maybe get a small cheap one, keep whatever you currently have
and run it in the ultrabay slot as a second drive for larger storage.

If you want capacity plus a performance bump, the Momentus XT is worth a look.

This thing is so hot, Newegg is sold out of them right now (and that's after putting on a "5 per customer" limit)!

Yeah, saw that too. I was thinking about getting one myself. I have the Intel G2 now. I like it cause it's quiet, but you got to baby it so much, I'm not so sure I want to keep it. Plus I'd like more capacity too, but I've heard they're more noisy and my x200 doesn't shield much noise. Could be one of those internet rumor type things. They're available on Amazon for the same price, at least they were yesterday.

I have several notebooks that I upgraded to 128 GB SSD. I also have the Seagate Momentus XT 256 GB on my desk (future project). My personal Notebook is the Z60m. I estimate that my overall machine performance increase by 100% over my previous Hitachi 100GB 7200 disk. i.e. Virus scan went from 1 hour to 30 minutes. I definitely support the Disk upgrade.
