Just ordered a T510. Did I do the right thing?

#1 Post by killer » Wed Aug 11, 2010 5:29 pm

After weeks of decision making I have ordered a replacement for my 4 year old T43 (1871-FWG).

The order is for a 4313-CTO. In other words a T510-i5 with 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD 7200rpm.

Having watched this forum for ages it seemed that T510 users were a happy bunch.

Opinions please. :)

I'm afraid to say that you may have made one of the most worst decisions of your life.
But, there is good news.
If you would ship it to me as soon as you recieve it, I promise to properly dispose of it.
I will even pay for the shipping costs to ease your pain.

@ARD: That's a very generous offer from you to pay the shipping costs. I have calculated the cost using the 'split infinitive' system and the T510 can be yours for USD 2000.

I think you'll be happy with that machine. Hopefully you were also able to order the WSXGA+ LCD with it. That LCD is the best for the model.

@Harryc: If you mean the HD+ screen then the answer is yes. I paid a few quid extra for HD+ because I want very good quality to match my new camera's capability.

Just to let you all know that my T510 arrived about 2 weeks ago. I am delighted with it.

It is wider than my old T43, mainly because it has a 16:9 screen ... which isn't a problem to me as I like that format. OK, I can hear the hisses from the audience but time moves on and 16:9 is the format that HD video uses. My camera shoots in 4:3 or 16:9. I prefer 16:9 especially for landscape shots.

It is about the same weight as my old T43. It makes a lot less noise, and is considerably cooler.

Would I want to carry it around? Probably not too far. I move around the house with it but that's enough. For travelling we have my wife's X201i which is small and light ... perfect for that job.

The screen is bright and clear and Harryc is right to advise buying the HD+ screen. Good advice, mate.

When I read all the gripes from T410 users on this forum I am so pleased I chose the T510.

I am happy. The T510 is a star. :D

Don't like to spoil the party but how do you find the keyboard ? I have heard that it is soft or flexes too much. What is your take on that ? I have a T60 15", would you make the switch to a T510 as I was thinking of it before I found out about the keyboard issue. Plus, my T60 is the last ThinkPad before Lenovo started taking over. Any thought would be great. Thanks.

Congrats on the acquisition! Barring one actually falling out of the sky into my lap, I will remain envious. ;)

What's the (implied) drawback of the FHD option (1920 X 1080)?

@alofano: I have had no problem with the keyboard. It seems responsive and just like every IBM/Lenovo keyboard I've used over many years. Sometimes I think people might be a little too critical if there is a minor change. Try using a keyboard on a Dell and you'll rush back to Lenovo. :)

@Radioguy: I wanted the best quality of screen I could get. I own a high quality camera so there is no point spoiling the ship for a ha'penny worth of tar ... as they used to say.

So...the FHD is not as good?
