T41p new m/b which gpu
T41p new m/b which gpu
hello all
i have just bought a very nice but dead t41p , has a decent battery ,opitical drive ,512 mb ram also a sl6f9 1500 1m cpu, will hope to find something better, bluetooth and wifi.
my main question is i have bought a new board with warranty for said laptop but the chips are different i obviously want the p spec the old board had a ati mobility fire gl t2 , the new one has a mobility radeon 9000 , the former has a large square cap about 35mm x 35mm covering the whole gpu and the new board is about 30mmx 22mm capped then with 2 further chips (ram) i guess all mounted on a board thats 35mmx35mm .
are these basically the same thing , just a chip revision also i will get this old board reflowed at some point although no amout of pressing southbidge or gpu would cause lcd to light although when left swiched on .. on battery only it would beep low batt warning.
thanks ian

Re: T41p new m/b which gpu
The Radeon 9000 is from the T41 non-p version. It is not quite the same GPU as the FireGL T2. The FireGL is more powerful, but gives out more heat, and since they are both way outdated, you may be better with the new GPU...

Re: T41p new m/b which gpu
thanks for the replies.
so i have a non t41p mb .. it was sold as a t41p board on ebay so thats a real pain, i had thought there was a replacement in that the fire gl was an older chip but that they where of similar performance and ram.
so before i go to war with the seller this is most definetly not a t41p board
thanks ian

Re: T41p new m/b which gpu
The seller may be correct in that it is a P board since not all P boards have the fire GL or 128MB GPU. Only the board model number will tell you for sure.

Yes indeed and it is described as System board assembly, ATI M10 GL-128, Gigabit Ethernet with security chip for T41p and shows as the only possible board for T41p in the Hardware Maintenance Manual.
The Radeon 9000 board is System board assembly, ATI M9-32, Gigabit Ethernet with security chip for T41, FRU 93P3310. Not aware of any p-board having this GPU (or any non-FireGL GPU for that matter...)

thanks all
well if seller can't replace with a correct 41p board than its a reflow or could i find a t43 or t43p board and will it fit, mines a 14" panel.
i say this as i have no idea as to failure on t41p board as pressing gpu or sb chips does nothing although it seems to be booting and it maybe a reflow will fix nothing.
i guess current cpu and ram will be unsuitable if i change mb to 43p.

Re: T41p new m/b which gpu
One of your options is any mobo from any T40/41/42/43 and R50/51/52.
Some R52 have a firewire port, for which there is no matching hole in the T4x chassis. With a Dremel tool, that's done in a few minutes.
The T43/R52 series use a faster and different CPU (FSB 533 instead of 400) and RAM (DDR2 instead of DDR) than the others mentioned above.
The other option is the reball/reflow at the link I gave you earlier. When you get the board back, it will be as good as new, if not better!

Re: T41p new m/b which gpu
Hi Ian - I've just picked up on this thread and I reflow boards up in Newcastle - see the blue banner above and RBS's reference to my website elsewhere.ianf wrote:thanks all

First of all if you were to send your board to me, we'd do a full diagnosis of the problem - we don't just leap in and hope for the best.
Having worked on these boards for a long time now, we can usually tell if the GPU or Southbridge need reflowing (resoldering the chip properly back onto the board) or reballing (removing the chip, replacing the existing solder balls with a new set, and resoldering the chip back onto the board). The latter is necessary if the solder balls are damaged.
If we are unable to fix the board then you won't be charged for the work - as simple as that. Also we can usually provide suitable replacement boards at good prices.
We have an excellent track record in UK and Europe, and we've found that people like our approach to our work and the way we communicate with our customers. Our prices aren't bad either!
I would also add that RBS is getting nothing from me for his blatant advertising of my services
Re: T41p new m/b which gpu
thanks poshgordie i had considered your services as my fall back option , i still hope the seller will honour the sale as it was the correct static bag just the wrong board . i now wish i had gone straight of to a t43 board as ram is a lot cheaper, i will still be happy with the t41p though , i have loads of t30's here the fastest being a nice one with a 2.4g cel 2g ram and a 320gb hd, runs really quick and no heat issues.
thanks also realblackstuff if i get the t41p sorted i will have a look for a 2.0g cpu they seem expensive but i guess the dothan will out perform my 2.4g cel in the t30.

Re: T41p new m/b which gpu
No need to guess, even a 1.6 Pentium M Dothan would out perform that Celeron.ianf wrote: thanks also realblackstuff if i get the t41p sorted i will have a look for a 2.0g cpu they seem expensive but i guess the dothan will out perform my 2.4g cel in the t30.

Re: T41p new m/b which gpu
well new board arrived as offered by ebay seller t41p..i have fitted the new cpu 2.0g and 1 stick for now of 1gig and a monster sized battery from china , i rushed to try it with an old 10gig hd and it runs fine in fact been runnig for about 48hrs so thats good and will give him a fair feedback it cost about £30 inc del.
the drive i want to fit was in my t30 that we use when travelling its a 320g my problem is that xp has corrupted and i want to get all my network keys from it ,when i put it in an usb caddy i can see all the files plus other stuff that i will move before i format on to another large drive .so how do recover them, my home one is easy just the others.
thanks ian
