anyone use figerprint reader for websites, email, etc. login

#1 Post by jmagbita » Wed Mar 09, 2005 1:20 am

has anyone used the fingerprint reader to do more than just get past the windows or startup password login? i've heard that you can use IBM Password manager to store your passwords for websites and email and other stuff and then the fingerprint reader to actually login instead of having to type in your password each time you visit a site.. is this true?

i've also read somewhere that it is kinda risky setting this up cause you have to setup up the CSS encryption thingy and that you might ending screwing up your computer.. can you use the password manager but not have to set it up so that you can start up the thinkpad and get in and into windows without having to put in passwords for those? i'm just thinking of how cool it'd be to use the fingerprint reader to access hotmail and bank of america, and stuff like that instead of ordinary password login.. at the same time, i'm scared i might screw up the notebook and render it useless!!

can anyone please explain options and advantages and disadvantages..

thanks in advance! :D

i'd like to use the password manager but i don't know if i completely understand what the results of doing so would be..

must i install the embedded security in order to install the password manager? i do not want any password login for startup or for windows.. i dont need my thinkpad to be that secure.. all i'd like to do is be able to use the fingerprint reader to login in into certain webpages and also some company programs that need..

also, must i install the css stuff.. or can i just install the password manager.. and how do i do that exactly?

has anyone had any success setting fingerprint reader to work with websites and nothing else, such as the start up or anything?

:D

When I was running on my T42p I was using the FPR for absolutely anything password related .. from the power on all the way down to banking and hotmail access. It was actually pretty awesome and always got looks from the people around me. At the moment with the X40 I'm obviously not using one since it isn't there .. BUT .. the T43p has been staring me in the face and calling me from the darkside .. to return to the T series as a workstation so the FPR might agin be put to good use.

how did you go about setting this up? is it easy? and can you set it so that you do not need to sign in on startup or getting into windows? i only want to use it for websites, banking, hotmail, etc. but not for getting into windows or anything like that...

any dangers in setting it up?

thanks!! :D

how does one configure a new user to use password manager? The lock icon in my tray doesn't do anything. I notice that this new user doesn't have privileges in the IBM password manger folder.

thanks

That is a GREAT write-up! By coincidence I just happened to notice it yesterday (while checking your T43p prices).

Folks, here's the URL for that Fingerprint Reader page:
