X31: is there any "fuse" ?

#1 Post by Windsurfer » Mon Aug 16, 2010 3:32 am

Hello,
I have just bought beautiful X31, replaced HDD and managed to install XP Pro but shortly after that I have blown the laptop. I mean I think my chinese fake power adapted did that to X31...laptop stopped working suddenly, than couple of seconds later there was pretty big smoke from power adapter. Laptop will not start again despite I used other power adapter.
The same power adapted has probably blown my T43 several months ago...I called Lenovo, they asked me some number and they said "this is genuine power adapter - that is why I used it again today for X31...with horrible result. My question is: do these laptops (X31 and T43) have some "fuses" somewhere that blow in cases like that and they just need to be replaced to fix the laptop ? Or am I naive...? If there is fuse, where is it, especially on X31 (which I fall in love instantly I started it) ? Is it easy operation or no chance for somebody who is not specialist ?
Thanks for your help...

yes, they do have a 'master' fuse, but it isn't a regular fuse, you need to have soldering experience to replace it. do you have a multimeter? with that you can test if the fuse is blown. It is a bit weird that your laptops aren't working anymore, you would expect that this chinese adapter just wasn't rated for the wattage your laptops asked, but the voltage should be fine. if your laptops aren't working anymore, then that would suggest that the voltage from the adapter was too high (which may probably have caused some damage in your laptops which caused them to drain more power which caused the adapter to blow...). if that's the case, then maybe there isn't much to do with them...
but, if that is true, then there is a chance your fuse isn't blown. so, if it's blown: replace and see what happens. if not: condolences.

Thanks Daniel. I decided to take them both (X31 and T43) to specialist.
When T43 "died" I measured power adapted voltage, it was 16.5 V (specification is 16.0 ?)
But 0.5V difference should not make a damage, my guess. That was why I did not blame the adapter but now, when X31 was blown after coupe of hours of work...

no, that doesn't make any damage. but, we don't know how that adapter worked under full load, so actually we don't know anything yet...
let's hope it's just a fuse...

Apparently its not just a fuse :-(
Specialist said "some chip"...he is just trying to find out what is this chip and if it can be replaced.

Hi there. I know this is an old Thread but I do love my X31s and any info about them is good info...

Wind, did you get yours fixed? Anything that you care to share with us?

Cheers,
Shaun.
