T42 or R51 ?
T42 or R51 ?
Don't know too much on notebooks . My budget allows for a
T42 with 735 Dothan 1.7 Ghz , 14" TFT 1024*768 , ATI 7500 32 MB and an
R51 with 725 Dothan 1.5 Ghz , 15" TFT 1400*1050 , ATI 9000 32 MB .
There are other minor differences , but these are the main ones for me . Would have liked a better ATI , but it just brings the cost up too much .
1. Is there any real noticeable performance difference between the 735 and 725 ?
2. Will the 15" SXGA here combined with the stronger ATI give a significantly better picture than the 14" XGA ?
3. Are there any other siginificant advantages of the T42 over the R51 here ?
Thanks .

Re: T42 or R51 ?
Simply put, if you are going to use you laptop on the road, get the T42. If it will be mainly a desktop replacement, get the R51. The CPU difference is negligible (and it can be upgraded if you need to anyway), but the 15" SXGA is a MUCH nicer screen to look at than the 14" XGA. Much more space, plus the ati 9000 is much faster than the 7500 should you wish to play games. However, if you carry your laptop around, the 15" R might be too much for you, while the T42 is very thin and light.aviwil wrote:Don't know too much on notebooks . My budget allows for a

I say go with which ever ThinkPad you want. If you want to get the R51 It's not that heavy or thick(the G series is). I have a R51 with a 15" inch and I take it everywhere with me and its not that heavy.
In my opinion, I think that if you use the ThinkPad on the road or for a desktop replacement, I think that which ever one will be perfect.

Cover materials, size and weight are VERY important. You may carry a 15" R51 with you, but that doesn't mean that others are willing to.
I'm a fairly strong guy, but a heavy laptop is still a real drag when crossing terminals while a large case is a pain when trying to watch a movie while shoe-horned into a coach-class seat.

...but your system costs pretty much double the money. He could probably get an R51 and an X series for the money that some T42p s cost...Batuta wrote: As we can see from your specs, my T42p can eat your R52 for breakfast
Sorry for this, but I just couldn't help it.
Your system specs come short in every category, so your question is kind of self-defeating.

On a more serious note, just skip the R51 and get the T42 that fits your budget. I'd rather have the wimpiest T42 with the slowest processor, smallest HD and weakest graphics than the top-line R52.
It may have crank windows and manual locks, but its still a Mercedes.

Can I sell a student girlfriend and get Educational discount?Batuta wrote:And my point in this still is "you get what you pay for" and cutting corners can end up being more expensive than just shooting straight to begin with.My budget allows for...."
My advice, sell the girl friend or the kids into slavery and get the best Thinkpad money can buy
If you're already single (last system upgrade used up all close relatives already) then try organ donation.
Who needs two kidneys anyway if he can have one T42p?
