256MB Memory Module for T-21?

#1 Post by Jim Olson » Wed Mar 09, 2005 10:28 am

Can anyone in this group cite a (non-IBM) manufacturer's part number and source for a 256MB memory module that works in a T-21? I'm willing to dump another $150 in this aging T-21 before I flee to a T-43.

"PC-100 compliant" is not adequate to define a usable memory module. I recently purchased two PC-100 256MB modules and they do not work. The machine will not boot with one or either.

I've read in this forum that only 16-chip modules will work. The non-functional ones shipped to me by this particular vendor were 8-chip modules. Naturally, he declines to accept them back for credit.

I'm perplexed that the computer even knows how many chips are on the memory module. Seems that this aspect of the module's design should be codified in some other, more rigorous specification in the same technical league with access time and latency.

I went onto eBay and bought a pair of genuine IBM modules for $120 which work perfectly in my T22.

Jim,

You can find tons of suitable memory on eBay for the early T series machines.

For the record, you want PC100 lo-density memory. Lo-density is evidenced by the fact that in most instances the sticks will be composed of 16 memory chips total or eight chips per side.

Expect to pay between ~$70 and $80 per stick.

If in doubt, ask one of us to check the URL of the sale.

Or if you want a pair of 128s instead of a single 256, I'll sell you the pair for $30 shipped.

The real stuff is about the same price and works. FRU 33L3070.

It is probably PC133 marketed as "backwards compatible" that really isn't. They get that stuff really cheap.
