?Good Approach to migrate to windows 7 on T400

#1 Post by T400plus » Wed Aug 18, 2010 6:15 am

I ,at last, want windows 7 on my T400.I have added
extra memory to get 4GB in all.
ithe notebook is the one with P8400 and wxga+(CCFL).
what is a good way to upgrade to w7 .The sole
intention is to use more memory as most of my software
is just meant fro 32 bit solo processors.

You'll have to install Windows 7 64 bit to get the OS to see/use all of the RAM. If your T400 has an integrated GPU, the BIOS will allocate some RAM to run the GPU. But that would happen regardless of running a 32bit or 64bit OS. As far as a migration strategy, the Lenovo recovery discs will include the 'Lenovo Experience' image which is optimized for Windows 7. That would be better to run vs. a vanilla OEM or retail version. So my recommendation would be to obtain a set of Lenovo W7 64bit recovery discs for the specific model of T400 that you have. 32bit apps will run on top of W7 64bit, so that should not be an issue.

Recovery discs?. They had skinned my friend extra 60-70 $ just to put xp instead of vista. No Cds/Dvds.My T400 is a 1st generation T400(the one with a p8400).I packed up the old 1+1 (2GB)
memory and invested in 4GB(2+2).I am hoping that I will get some reasonable performance improvement with 4 GB and windows 7.
I saw a friend using a 64 bit w7 on his PC(the big desktop one) with all his regular 32 bit software.
Only problem was HP drivers for his old but operational design jet .The HP Leaser jet had the drivers.

You could post an Ad in the Marketplace forum for recovery CD's. You never know who might have them out there. If you don't find them then regular OEM 64bit W7 is fine.

I put a standard copy of Windows 7 Pro x64 on my T400 and have had no problems. You can download the Lenovo Experience stuff (and all the drivers) via System Update.

Without a COA, that would not be a legal installation.

Buddy. Good to find another Thinkpadder in Bombay :) . The Lenovo service for Thinkpads are contracted out to APL Mumbai and these guys are crappy people. They charge you for services that do not exist on the roster and will not provide the relevant services that they should ...

They recently quoted me some $$$ equivalent to a retail copy of XP, for installing XP (which is free license as from the Downgrade license for Win7).. they would do an INSTALL and not even give us any MEDIA.

Do not go their direction. Drop me a line and maybe I can help.
