CD drive continues to power off (T510)

#1 Post by davepol » Wed Aug 18, 2010 11:11 am

Hi
Cd drive in my T510 continues to power off itself, but then when I put the cd in it won't power back on. I was looking everywhere in the power manager but couldn't find any option for the cd drive to stay on. Is there any option for the cd drive to stay on without annoying "energy saving" mode?

Thanks,
davepol

I don't have mine in front of me at the moment but there should be an option in the Lenovo power manager to allow it to Manage the Optical drive. Disable that and it should no longer power off.

In order to get the Power Manager you need to use Lenovo's system update.

My machine came with the power manager already installed. I looked all over the power manager and I found an option to disable usb power off but no sign of the same option for cd drive.
Thanks,

I have a T410, but this is what I found in Power Manager. On the Power Plan tab, expand the System Settings. The last item is "Automatic optical drive power off." Mine is set to Enabled for both battery & ac operation. When I push the button on the drive, it powers up and opens. I've not had a problem with it powering off with a disk inserted.

I have a T510i with this problem - and definitely do NOT have the "optical drive" option under the system settings in power manager ... :(. In my case, the menu option "ThinkPad Default" is called "Energy Saver" - but even if I try to create a new power plan, the optical drive options are simply not there.

Power Manager is v3.28.

Any ideas welcome!

Andrew

The latest Power Manager is v3.40, so updating it might help.
Some people also say the Optical Drive option in Power Manager disappears after it powers off for the first time after boot.

I hope that update helps, because I'm still getting sudden usb power off's (when I'm not using it, restart helps). I understand that we should save energy and all that but I would prefer that my laptop components stay on when I'm using it!

Many thanks, Colonel, it now seems to be fixed. I downloaded 3.40, but the install ran into the sand and I had to force a power off ... :(

On reboot, I immediately went into Power Manager (still at 3.28), and indeed the optical drive option was visible! I disabled power off, and then went back and had another go at installing 3.40 - successful this time. So with any luck I now have the best of all worlds - the latest Power Manager, and a drive that doesn't power off!! ... :D

Thanks again.

Andrew
