Do all X31 models accept 2 gigbytes of RAM ?

#1 Post by visitor » Wed Mar 09, 2005 1:19 pm

Hi. I've just ordered my second Thinkpad which is an X31, model 2672.
It has a centrino 1.3 gz processor and 512mb of RAM. I understand this is one of the earliest X31 models since there are others running at 1.7gz speeds.
I would like to maximize the RAM in this machine but I am confused as I've read conflicting information as to the maximum RAM it will accept.
Crucial site states that it will accept 2 gigbytes by using two 1 gigbyte modules.
But looking at IBM's "Tabook.pdf" it doesn't even mention a 1.3gz X31.

Anyway, does anybody here uses more than 1 gigbyte RAM in his or her 1.3 X31 ? In case affirmative, where can I find 1 gigbyte RAM modules for the X31, and should I choose pc7000 chips instead of pc2100in spite of no speed benefit ? I've seen 512mb pc2700 RAM cheaper than pc2100, reason why I ask.
Thanks for helping.
Augusto

Your purchase is not a current machine, so you'll find it listed in the TAWBOOK.PDF which lists all T. A and X machines withdrawn from marketing.

Yes, all X31s can take 2GB of RAM.

I don't have an answer for you WRT using PC7000 memory, but I've installed PC2700 memory in several, including a 1.3GHz model, and they run just fine.

Any name brand memory is acceptable, but I tend to prefer Micron memory from www.crucial.com.

Many thanks for sharing your precious knowledge, it has made me even happier for having chosen this unique little baby. It should arrive in two days coupled with a docking station.

TAWBOOK.PDF does not mention my X31 which is 2672-PP4.
Looking at IBM's Product Information page ( http://tinyurl.com/6mafm ) , it says "based on 2672-BBU" .
The link below shows the BBU model maxed at 1gb :

I'm having a hard time getting a precise information about this machine.

The TAWBOOK shows the BBU model and all X31s definitely take 2GB RAM max.

That's undoubtedly a typo on the IBM page, it happens fairly frequently.

See here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46475 for an overview of X31 models.

Thanks again, James !
Now I better get my eyes to start getting used to it. Beautiful screen, but the T23's 14-inch (xga) is much more comfortable text-reading wise.
best regards,
Augusto
