No, get a T7200, T7400 or T7600.

actually you have to be a bit more specific than that

you need to stick with T7200, T7400 or T7600's that have the Intel S-spec numbers of SL9SF, SL9SE, and SL9SD respectively, not just any old T7200, T7400 or T7600 will fit correctly.

there are also some processors between T2400 and T7200 in horsepower that would be an even cheaper upgrade, though not 4MB cache, for example T5600

What you mean is that you need the PGA (socketed) processors, not the BGA (soldered) variants. Indeed the S-Spec specifies that, but when buying a CPU off someone, I would not trust the S-Spec, but just ask plainly whether the CPU has pins or balls. Some sellers actually have workshop that solder pin boards to BGA CPUs.

T5600 actually is 64-bit, but otherwise a pretty weak upgrade to a T2400. Same frequency, same cache, maybe 10% extra efficiency.

I would go by the S-spec, then you know exactly what you are really getting, do you really want some kluge thing where someone has soldered in 478 pins manually? - This seems like a huge chance for errors or unreliable connections!

As I said, you don't. Since some sellers are not even aware of what S-spec is, or just misadvertise. You have to ask.
