T-40 frozen in suspend mode
The T40 is frozen in suspend mode.
Holding down the power button for up to 30 seconds had no effect.
It won't shut down or resume.
Is it safe to remove the battery in this state?
Or any suggestions?
Not sure if this is relevant but the T40 is running Ubuntu 8.10.
Thanks

There is probably nothing wrong with your Thinkpad. Here is a discussion of the problem over on the Ubuntu forums:

Re: T-40 frozen in suspend mode
Thanks for the info.
Tried holding the Access IBM button alone and with the power button, but it is still locked.
My question from a hardware perspective remains.
Is it safe to disconnect the battery while in suspend
Data loss isn't a concern just the worried about damage to the TP or batttery
Thanks

Re: T-40 frozen in suspend mode
You cannot consider me an expert on the subject, but I can't think of any harm other than data loss that would occur from total removing all power sources. I have had to do just that with desktop systems before, with no ill effects.
I have had Thinkpads freeze up like that with Ubuntu before, but IIRC holding the power button for what seemed like a very long time, finally shut the system down.

Re: T-40 frozen in suspend mode
Neil,
Thanks for all the support.
I removed the battery and rebooted and everything is back to normal.
I also disabled suspend so hopefully this won't happen again.
Thanks also from a very happy 12 year old boy.
