Is there any improvement on X41 tablet with Readyboost?

#1 Post by Tim82 » Fri Aug 27, 2010 4:10 pm

Hello!

I recently use an X41 tablet as my daily mobile machine/workhorse, mostly for office usage, light picture-editing and for staying online. (I have a lighter and smaller F-S Lifebook, but it's under repair yet.) I ordered from eBay a Lenovo-branded SSD (mostly for avoiding that annoying "danger! you don't use 100% IBM-compatible HDD! BEEP!" message known as error 2010), but it seems take a long way before arrive...

Until I get my SSD, I decided to put a Toshiba 4 GB SDHC in the cardreader slot of my X41t for Readyboost (maybe this can improve a little of the system's responsiveness). I'm a bit skeptical, maybe Readyboost is just something of a placebo... I use Win 7 HP 32bit.

Had anyone used on X40/X41 (tablet) Readyboost with Vista/Win 7? Is this feature useful on these models? I found one thread http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=89054, but there isn't much information about the usefulness and improvement of this function...

Oh, and another "stupid" question: is there any straight relation between Readyboost's performance and the boost drive's speed class? (Sorry, but never used Readyboost before...)

The rule of thumb I've seen on Readyboost is that it does not offer significant performance improvements if you already have more than 512MB of system RAM.

Unless anyone has thought of a workaround, the in-built cardreader has abysmal read speed and is totally useless for ReadyBoost. It rarely even passes the test to qualify for it. I bought a 16GB SDHC class 10 card for this and it shows me read-speeds of about 3MB/s, not to mention that CPU load is 100% and machine unresponsive during read operations (not so much during write). Must be a firmware issue.

Steer away, buddy!

But I actually found some help from a USB stick for ReadyBoost when I had disabled pagefile and was using the original hard drive. It was good for extra working memory that tended to run out without pagefile.

Ready boost stores recently accessed programs to make them launch faster - with a slow hard drive there is a noticeable improvement than without it - that is one of the reasons that I did not use windows 7 on my t41 - the lack of a card reader meant that I had to have a usb stick in all the time. It is a pity if the X41 card reader does not work - that was the best solution I have seen, and you have the card to transfer files.

I used to use ReadyBoost on my X41T. However I have since disabled it and to be honest, the system feels like it boots faster, loads programs quicker and in general is more responsive than when I had it enabled. It could be the speed of the built in reader, or something else. All that I know is for my usage under Windows 7, the system feel quicker without readyboost.

I now use the SD reader as supplemental storage support for saving files to and using them when in Linux.
