Ultrabay CD-RW/DVD drive broken.

#1 Post by fatleader » Fri Aug 27, 2010 4:17 pm

I recently found a T60 in nice working condition at the computational market. Everything works fine except for a broken chassis next to the left hinge, right above the heat sinks, and a semi-broken Ultrabay optical drive. I have tried soldering and gluing the chassis together, but to no avail. I eventually patched it up by gluing pieces of plastic right in the area between the broken arm and the heat sink. No more shaky screen and snapping noises.

Now it's onto the optical drive: it would open up if I jiggle the laptop a little. This gets quite annoying especially when I have it in my bag and the drive would randomly eject. Would there be any way to tighten the eject lock or would I have to buy a new drive for it?

Thanks.

I've never had any success tightening or adjusting the door on those drives. Replacement is my usual answer to issues with them. Hopefully you'll get a different answer.

The first post talked about soldering the frame. The frame is magnesium which can easily burn if you heat it enough to solder. It makes a worse fire than you can imagine.

HaHa, I remember playing with magnesium in chemistry class...so much fun. Yes, it is quite a brilliant reaction when it ignites, and I wouldn't recommend trying to put it out with water  Did you set your ThinkPad on fire richk?

On topic: http://outlet.lenovo.com/accessories/st ... p3270.html It's not a burner, but if you check back with the Lenovo Outlet from time to time you may find one for cheap.

Double check that it is compatible, I don't know for sure.

I didn't burn one myself, but 250 years ago I was a chemistry major. The part that breaks is where it is thin over the fan vent, where it would ignite easily.
