T40 won't start up

#1 Post by thinkpad321 » Sun Aug 29, 2010 10:44 pm

hi

My T40 won't start up. Leading up to this situation of the T40 not starting up, when I rested my hand on the left side of the palm rest, the T40 would freeze til I restarted. This has been happening for the past 3 weeks.

Now it won't start.

When I attempt to start it by pressing the power button, the indicator lights flash, then the battery light and button to the left of it turn green, the then the battery button turns yellow. The screen is black the whole time. I can hear the hard drive running, but oddly, the hard drive activity light shows no activity. It doesn't even flicker during this whole attempted start up procedure. The hard drive is good because it works in my other T40.

I tried swapping the power supply and battery with my other good T40. Same things happens as described above.

There were no pink screen, LCD failure symptoms.

i have a T40 service manual and I can replace a failed component but i don't know what's wrong.

How can I figure out what component it failing so I can replace it.

Thanks

Angelo

The failing component is your motherboard, I'm sorry to say.

Have you been having problems with your USB ports or wireless card prior to this last episode? Just trying to narrow down the area of failure between GPU (more likely) and Southbridge chip...

Hi

Thanks for responding.

To answer you, I don't use the wireless card so i don't know about it's functionality. The USB port has been working fine.

thanks

The other check to do is the time the laptop takes to switch off when pressing the I/O button.

If it switches off straight away then it's most likely and unsoldered Southbridge.

If it takes a few seconds of holding the button down for it to switch off then it's usually the Graphics chip.

It's not officially announced yet but myself and RealBlackStuff are about to launch The Board Room where you can swap out your broken board for a refurbished one.

We're not fully up and running yet since we're trying to get a stock of broken boards together to kick it off - maybe you could help there.

Also it's possible that RBS already has a suitable board for you if you'd like to contact him either via a PM or via the Contact Us on the site (note not sure if Contact Us is fully working yet).
