fan issues

hi,
i have an R61, 8918.
my cpu fan is very noisy and the other day i even got a fan error screen.
i suspect the end is near for the current one.
i searched a bit and found the model number i need.
since it's hard to come by (only one in ebay) is there another model that can match my machine?

Have a look on eBay at the 15.1" WS T61 fan 42X4685.
Looks very similar, if not identical.

they all look pretty much the same..
the thing is that when i search for "R61 fan" i get alot of matches.. but a search for the specific model shows only one match.
i'm not sure wether or not to take the risk...

AFAIK the only difference between them is the number printed on the FRU label.

from looking at pictures of the fans in ebay - i beg the differ..
there are small differences in the looks of the thing.
i dont know if they are crucial, but they exist.

I assumed you have a 15.1" widescreen R61.
If not, please tell us the full model, e.g. 8918-DEG, the CPU in there, what graphics (Intel or nVidia).
Maybe I'm pointing you wrongly.
Is there a P/N or FRU on your current cooler?

Check 42W2823, for T61 with integrated GPU.
It seems as if the picture on the R61 ad on eBay is wrong, or it has the wrong P/N or FRU!

the full model # is 8918-cto
it's the 15.4'' screen
the graphics is nVidia Quadro NVS 140M

i'll take a look at the fan i've got and post a pic of it here later on.

Without having one here to compare, it is impossible to be sure. I checked and the R61 fans I have are all for machines with integrated graphics. I see very few R61 machines with nvidia. The only one I have seen for a long time was just sold and shipped out this morning, which is why they are hard to find. It is on its way from San Francisco to Kazakhstan. I can tell you that the T61 fans with intel graphics are very different from the R61 fans, so the T61 nvidia probably won't fit. You need 42W2780. The one on eBay is VERY expensive. If you were in the U.S., you could buy a new one for half that amount from IBM, but I don't know about availability in your location. Send me a PM and include your email address. I will discuss the possibility of repair and it will be difficult to do through the PM system

Call IBM Israel. Last time I had to buy a fan from them (for T42), their price was surprisingly good (which cannot be always said about their accessory prices). Tell them the FRU of your fan (42W2780), and they will give you a price quote on either that FRU or a compatible one.
