Short answer: Unless you tell me of a specific problem you wish fix, the modem and/or router you have now are likely to be perfectly fine ...
I'm on Comcast cable with a Linksys BEFCMU10. Normal operations are fine, but on about half the sites I lose connection as soon as I start a streaming video - like clockwork. I've never gotten completely through some streams. Old black and whites tend to run forever. I've read this is quite common. Some times a LAN Repair will reconnect me - or a disable and re-enable. Sometimes it takes a modem power down. Sometimes I shut everything down for half an hour. That's my experience with perfectly reliable modems.

Perhaps something other than the modem is at fault. That would be great.

After my old Linksys BEFSR41 modem died I was using one of those powder box WRT160N v3's I was sold by Cisco as new. It was used. It would run my two laptops on wireless anywhere from 2 hours to 2 days then just quit. No second computer. No internet. Linksys support could always get it going - for another 2 hours or days so refused an exchange. Finally I went back to a single computer on ethernet. That's my experience with perfectly reliable routers.

I have guessed that the router overheats, which would explain why it was returned.

Are you sure you don't mean to say that all modems made in the last year or two are reliable?

Yes, but not necessarily. I would not expect that you have been suffering longer than two years with bad modem and/or router without having done something about it for all that time!

In any case, router and cable modem discussions fall in a different category than the topics on this forum. You will find everything you need/want to know at:

Good luck!

Since you are obviously one who watches things with utmost care to make sure no one gets information from the wrong place, perhaps you would be so kind as to direct me to the exactly right place at dslreports to get the information I need to make my T60p handle streaming videos at top effectiveness and efficiency. I have had little success thus far, for reasons I am totally unable to divine. My reading seems to tell me there are various hardware combinations that work far better than others for this - with the exception that one or two have assured me that anything will do anything perfectly reliably. Perhaps the limitations of the T60p demonstrate an exception to the latter, but I am certainly in no position to determine that, given my personal abilities and/or inabilities; so please direct me to exactly the correct place to ask about it. It would be most unfortunate to ask at the wrong place.

JimL: There is no "wrong" place to get information! Your sarcasm, if that is what it is, is off-mark. Get all the info you need/want here, if you can, if that is what you prefer. I was simply offering you an excellent source for information on connectivity issues unrelated to your Thinkpad, since your last question dealt with modems and routers, and not with laptops.

If you can find your way through these forums, then you will find your way on the forums at DSL Reports. Even if not, there are many good people over there, as here, who will guide you with loving care. I wish you all the best!
