Thinkpad A22e: broken CCFL or inverter??

#1 Post by agarza » Thu Sep 02, 2010 10:18 pm

Hello community!

My dad's Thinkpad A22e display just went off today :(
You can't see nothing on the screen.
I connected a external LCD monitor and the image is there, but after looking closely and playing with the lid there was a sudden image with the IBM logo (upon restart) and then it dimmed (the image is still there but you can't see it)

That lead me to suspect the CCFL is dead right? or is it the inverter (which tbh I don't know which function does it perform inside the LCD casing)

I wait for Thinkpad wise men to help me on this one. I've had that machine since August 2001 and it has served pretty well.

Regards

P.S. Today is my bday!

Well, happy birthday to you - to begin with, and many happy returns!

What you're describing sounds like a dying backlight (CCFL) in my opinion.

Good luck.

Quick response!!

Weird enough! The display came back to life, I think something was stuck in the sensor which turns the display off when you close the lid, so it seems it's working again

Long hail the Thinkpad line

Thanks for the congrats akjula.

Shame on me for not remembering that one... but let's just say I had a very rough day and leave it at that...

The important thing is that the machine is back up and running...

Same issue on a A31p. The LCD starts flickering, then the backlight goes off, but the image is OK. If I turn the screen off and on after a while it behaves normally again for a while (even hours). May something be disconnected partially on the motherboard? I've read that the inverter may be causing the problem. If anyone knows something I would really appreciate some help.
