Any pitfalls to swapping the motherboard/LCD in a T60 14.1"?

#1 Post by alkemyst » Sat Sep 04, 2010 8:27 am

I have a X1400 system board coming (actually the entire bottom minus removable hard parts)...my plastics are mint as my laptop sat in a dock for 6 years and never moved so I want to swap it all over. I also ordered a 1400x1050 screen (really wanted to do the 1600x1200 one but the fitiment I didn't like).

I have the hardware manual and this looks straight forward. I am a PC Tech during the day, but I have only broke down a few laptops in my time. I should have all the tools down to 0000 screwdrivers, tri heads, etc if needed...I think I am dealing with all phillips screws. I did order a 41W4504 screwkit.

Is there a place to get the monitor/lcd tape they use at the factory? The last machine I worked on it was a lot like medical tape, but I am not sure if it's the same. My other replacement panel for a Dell came with a small roll of tape. Are there alternatives I can use?

Thanks

Hi,
I haven't come across any supply of the double sided adhesive tape that they use. Even when you order the LCD panel directly from IBM, no tape is applied or included. Right now i don't use any and don't find it to be a problem really. But on a T42 where the LCD was replaced, some tape was needed. I ended up buying a roll of wall-to-wall carpeting tape and cut it to fit - it's called 'Fermoflex'. Don't know if this can be bought in the US, but i bet there must be something similar at any DIY retailer.

Off ebay from leonworks2003. The guy has tons for $101 and some change. He has been mentioned in other posts as a good seller and the screens were fine.

He does ship very well and fast. If IBM/Lenovo will just get me my screws to put it all back together. :)

I paid on the 1st of Sept. late night and it arrived yesterday morning (the 7th).

I have the double sided white carpet tape here. The LCD tape I am used too was not doublesided but more like a white paper tape that went over the wires. Are the thinkpads more like the carpet tape?

If so that'd be good for me since I have a ton of that.
