I just upgraded my 600X from Win 98SE to Win2K and I noticed a significant decrease in pointer speed and acceleration compared to Win98SE. I knew to expect some difference in pointer behavior with an OS change. What I didn't expect was that the speed and acceleration of the pointer on my 600X with Win2K is much less than on my T23 with Win2K preinstalled. I have ensured that trackpoint sensitivity and mouse speed and acceleration are set the same on both machines. Both machines are using the IBM trackpint drivers. Is there such a difference in the trackpoint hardware of the T23 vs. 600X that would cause this, or is there something else I should be looking at?
Thanks in advance.
Jeff
Lower Trackpoint speed on 600X w Win2K vs T23 w Win2K
I'm pretty sure that the trackpoint hardware on the T23 is different than the one on the 600x. It is a newer version of the hardware and (to me) it actually feels different when I use it. So the trackpoint speed settings on a T23 verses a 600x will be different. I think that the T23 trackpoint has a smoother feel and is more sensitive than the 600x trackpoint. On your 600x, just set the pointer speed higher and you should be able to get it very close to the speed of your T23.
Problem solved: I think part of my problem was I tweaked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\TrackPoint\sample_rate.
It should be 40 decimal and I upped it to 80. I put it back to 40. Also I am now using the Microsoft TrackPoint driver instead of the IBM TrackPoint driver. (Not sure if that changes things)
Now my pointer is zippier than ever. Event faster than on my T23. Also, I discovered if you disable the scrolling and magnify function of the blue TrackPoint button, the blue button now acts like the Intellimouse middle button when using Internet Explorer and MS office apps (cool).
One more observation: on both the 600X and the T23, when the pointer speed is set to max in the control panel, it is virtually impossible to get the pointer to move one pixel at a time. It will jump one or two pixels at a time. That sucks. This is even true using an external serial mouse. In order to track one pixel at a time, I have to lower the pointer speed to close to half, and that's way too slow. On the other hand, with Win98, even with the pointer speed at max, you can still track one pixel at a time.
