Dies during boot or login or shortly thereafter

#1 Post by kmayer » Sun Sep 05, 2010 3:22 pm

Greetings,

I had my T41P (2373-GEU) on yesterday, and when I went over to it and the screen was snowy and machine unresponsive. When I rebooted, it would begin to boot and then just die. No error message beep or anything. After repeated attempts, it does the same thing. Sometime it dies within a few seconds, sometimes I get as far logging into XP before the machine dies and all goes blank. What do you think the issue is? Power supply?

Thanks,

Kevin

When it 'goes blank', does the power light remain on and do the fans still spin? Hard drive activity light on? If yes then you probably have a loose GPU problem. Try running to an external monitor as a test.

Does the time it takes to die vary with ambient temperature? Does it fail earlier if you try to boot successively? Does it get to login more often in the morning?

(I'm hinting at an overheat :D )

Thanks for your help guys. Time does not seem to vary with temp. When it goes blank, the green battery light blinks and the light that says it's plugged in are on, but no hard drive or other activity. Also noticed last night the battery light was blinking amber. Battery is two years old and had been working fine. I'm wondering if maybe the battery suddenly went bad vs. the slower degradation i'm used to seeing?
