Old 385CD, two problems . . .

#1 Post by Wayne » Mon Sep 06, 2010 1:07 pm

Just inherited this classic. No modem or Ethernet. Had W98FE on it. Reformatted and installed W98SE. Installed without a hitch, sound and video OK. Two problems.

1. No mouse function. Plugged in a PS/2 optical mouse, no joy. Used a USB mouse with the PS/2 adapter. No joy. No conflicts in Device Manager, Standard PS/2 mouse listed, but mouse won't work. TrackPoint OK.

2. Two Type II PCMCIA slots. Both dead. Plugging in an Ethernet PCMCIA card either slot, no lights. Not recognized by system. Slots shows up in BIOS.

Any thoughts?

If you're comfortable taking the machine apart, you might take a look and see if the PCMCIA ports can be reseated. No don't about the PS/2 mouse though.

Go get the configuration utility from Lenovo's website for your model and make sure the ports are enabled. There are PC card drivers for Win95/98 available on the website as well.

Well, DUH!! The PCMCIA card I used is 32 bit. This machine wants 16 bit. Duh! Just ordered one from Amazon.

Still can't get the mouse to work, though.

Fixed. On this old model you have to turn off the Track Point.
