IBM Rescue&Recovery or Norton Ghost or Acronis TrueImage

#1 Post by ehsu » Thu Mar 10, 2005 4:56 pm

Hi,

Is IBM Rescue and Recovery any good compared to Norton Ghost/Acronis?

Which backup utility do you use to backup your drive?

Comments or experiences are appreciated.

Thanks,

R&R works very well for me. The Rescue environment is of great use, backup works flawless. R&R is the only backup tool that works with Utimaco Safeguard Easy (full hdd encryption), so this is a huge benefit. In addition I read that IBM engineers already use the Ipod to save the crashed ThinkPad. The software is One-touch Rescue & Recovery on Linux and is not as yet an announced IBM product (see http://www.techworld.com/storage/news/i ... ewsID=3280).

With R&R you can skip certain file types for the backup (i.e. .mpeg), as far as I remember this isn't possible with acronis (but this might have been changed).

On the other hand is Acronis a fine product, much faster compared to R&R. But R&R just fits into the Thinkvantage philosophy, ties in harddisk encryption (even the Rescue environment is fully encrypted with SGE), supports IBM Client Security and the best of all: it's free.

I use Norton Ghost, it came bundled with SystemWorks 2003, and it works with minimal effort. I backup (mirror) my IBM 40GB drive to a 20GB drive placed into the Ultrabay 2000. Takes about 10 minutes to run on my T21 (800/512/40) and, yes, I have had to 'restore/recover'. Backup with no problems, ease of use, and bulletproof recovery! I am confident other software products also offer similar results.

I'm with s0larian here - R & R seems to have its advantages.
I've heard of some problems with True Image/external USB drives and corrupt images but others might be able to shed more light on these issues. I think True Image is also known to give fa alse estimate size for compressed archives. I have had no problems with R & R.

Thanks for the inputs. I will give R&R a try despite using DriveImage/Ghost for years. It sounds like R&R is a fine utility and hopefully will come in handy when restore is needed.

R&R crashes when I try to skip some files, so you can't count that as a feature...

I voted for Ghost, but I'm still using their product prior to Symantec's purchase. I agree with you about Norton ruining a good product....This is similar to Microsoft ruining good products they should have left well enough alone.

I've used all above and stuck with Acronis for my needs. R&R is a waste of time to me and Ghost is too problematic.

Acronis 8.0, since no one at IBM Support (such as it is, you earned it guys) would advise how to get past Error 1722 in an install of IBM "Rescue and Recovery" or its predecessor, and Ghost 9.0 produced unbootable images.

Hidden Partition

#12 Post by Gee » Fri Mar 25, 2005 2:23 am

Does anyone know if the IBM Rescue and Recover will image an entire hard drive including the hidden F11 partition (The Recovery Partition)

RNR time ?

#16 Post by jparrot427 » Mon Nov 28, 2005 8:18 am

Hello, seeing as you do use RNR, pray let me know how long it takes to BU your HD. Here, I have a G-41 2.3 GHz, the HD is 40 g but only 9.5 g are taken up. It takes 4.5 HOURS to do a BU.

Acronis all the way.

Ghost has to many compatibility issues, and things it doesn't support.

R&R is just downright slow. Which is bad, because it means your less likely to backup.

I can incrimental backup my HD in 45 minutes or less with Acronis... meaning I do it at least once a week.

So, I guess that my 4.5 hours is in line with normality. Got me wondering as a True Image BU would take only 20 minutes. Same USB external HD at 4200 rpm. What else is RNR doing ?

Have a great day. JP.

Quick cheap backup

#20 Post by r50cheapskate » Thu Dec 01, 2005 1:31 pm

I just don't see the benefit of backing up on the same hard drive. It's not so hard to just burn a single CD of the few data that change frequently (My Documents, e-mail), and a few more CDs of things like pictures and music. There's no reason to back up software if you have the discs it came on.

My total time spent is about ten minutes twice a week and maybe twenty minutes once a month for the big stuff. And of course, any time I've done major work, I make this decision: Is the time I spent on all the work today worth the 15 cents a CD-R costs?

RNR

R50, hello.

You are right, 15¢ is not much. But is not your user name " R50 cheapskate" ? Hooots.

I do a lot of this CD-write too but I use RW media. But it is nice to have a full BU, as I mentioned, I changed my HD for a large one and the Restore was great in this modification.

I am looking for a second G-41 on eBay. They are great.

Be good. JP.

I takes me most of a day to load all the stuff I run onto my TP after a clean install and configure it the way I want. Plenty of reason for me to image the entire HD. I don't care about the data, that's automatically mirrored on two other HDs on the network, it's the apps that are a pain to replace.

Restore !

#23 Post by jparrot427 » Thu Dec 01, 2005 7:09 pm

Hello Nemo.

>>> it's the apps that are a pain to replace.

You can say that again. I do not have that much to do as my systems are mainly "work" systems, never play but loading Office and all takes a good part of three hours for me. An image is great. Doing this image, to be worth the effort, should be done at least weekly, methinks.

I do mine after going to bed, it is all done next morning, I use an USB 2.0 external HD of 20 gigs. I only have 9.4 gigs taken up on my 40 gig HD on this Thinkpad. All my photos are on their own USB HD. They are ogres of space on a drive.

You be good and have a great day. JP.

I've been using ghost for years, and it always works well, that is why I vote for it.
As to R&R, it is a pitty that it can be run under windows 2003. so I have to give it up.

What do you mean by this ? I knoe of Windows 2000, Windows XP but nothing of Windows 2003. The OS has nothing to do with R&R, it can be run all by itself. I am sure.
