*DEAD* because someone stole my laptop.

#1 Post by slugg » Thu Sep 09, 2010 9:47 pm

Update: The laptop has been stolen. :(

I have a current generation, 13" MacBook Pro. Nothing wrong with it at all - it just turns out that Mac OS X is just not doing it for me. Fantastic computer, otherwise! It's currently fitted with an Invisible Shield. Base specs.

I'd like to trade it for a ThinkPad. Obviously, something pretty current and of similar value to my MacBook Pro. I wouldn't mind either party adding cash, if necessary.

I'm only interested in 14 inch laptops OR SMALLER. Please no 15 or 17 inch laptops. Also, I'm very interested if you have the larger capacity batteries (9 cell, I believe?) and/or ultrabay batteries, because I get a good 9 hours of battery life with my MacBook Pro. I'd like to stay close to that, if possible :-)

Thanks for reading!

You can just install W7 on it and run it like your average PC laptop. I'm typing this on a unibody white Macbook which is running W7 in dual boot with OS X. Why trade?

Driver quality would be one good reason. Mac OS X has stellar driver support for Apple hardware -- but in my experience Apple's drivers (on the Windows side of things) tend to be somewhat lacking. Understandable, since Apple probably isn't too jazzed about folks using Windows full-time, but annoying all the same.
Need help with Linux or FreeBSD? Catch me on IRC: I'm ThinkRob on FreeNode and EFnet.

Code: Select all

Current laptop: X1 Carbon 3
Current workstation: none

That's not entirely true. All the drivers are easily available and come on your restore CDs. The only thing I couldn't get working properly was the sleep function, for some reason my Macbook seems to turn off after a few hours of sleep in W7. That will probably need some minor tweaking but other than that it works perfectly fine as a PC.

Perhaps I should have clarified: I didn't mean "lacking" in the sense that they're not there -- Apple provides drivers for all the hardware -- but rather in the sense of "buggy or otherwise inferior to their Mac OS X counterparts".

Once again, aside from the silly sleep issue everything works just fine in W7. Considering that your MBP is essentially the same computer with a couple small addons (firewire and SD-reader) there is a good chance it will work ok too.

Would you be interested in trade for a X200 with LED screen and 9-cell batt? Send me a PM if that's the case.

Thanks, everyone. I'll close the thread now :(
