Addidtional RAM for a Z60M, upgradeable CPU and wireless

#1 Post by Zeeman28a » Fri Sep 10, 2010 3:24 am

I've got a Z60M, 2529-ECU with only 1GB of RAM. From what I've seen online, the laptop supports up to 2GB. Is there any way I can increase that? How and why would IBM/Lenovo limit how much ram is supported on the system. The laptop uses PC2-4200 DDR2-533 SODIMM 533MHz, so couldn't I install 2x 2GB for a total of 4GB? I haven't found any larger SODIMM's than 2GB.

According to the specs, I have the Pentium M 760(2GHz) CPU. Is there an upgrade available?

Can I upgrade my Intel 802.11abg wireless to support 802.11n?

And can I upgrade my 128MB ATI Radeon X600 video?

Thanks.

Your Z60M is an advanced version of the T43, not a variety of a T60.

You can only up your RAM to max. 2x 1GB (chipset limitation).
You can up your CPU to M 770/SL7SL 2.133GHz or M 780/SL7VB 2.266GHz.
You can up your wifi to include 802.11N. MiniPCI wifi cards with N are available on e.g. eBay.
You can NOT upgrade your video.

If you are that unhappy, it's probably cheaper to buy another laptop...

One drastic alternative for an upgrade is to swap out the motherboard with a Z61m or Z61p motherboard. Those have improved graphics and use Core Duo/Core 2 Duo CPUs. You can reuse much of the remaining parts, like LCD, battery, keyboard, optical and hard drives, palmrest and more.

I did one such upgrade myself, posted here --> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=79477

At this point, I might suggest just finding a Z61m parts machine or lower half and just use the best parts from each machine.

Thanks for replying.

I thought of a new laptop. Was looking at the W510 and the T510 but to get the high res screen, the laptops are almost $3K Canadian. 1366x768 just doesn't cut the mustard anymore if you know what I mean, and was thinking I could buy myself another year with some upgrades for the Z60M.
