A/B/G WIFI mini pci cards with no BIOS hacking

#1 Post by johnport » Thu Mar 10, 2005 9:41 pm

Hello All,

I am looking to upgrade/date the wifi in a T41 2379DJU - it has the standard INTEL 2100 A/B card and I want an A/B/G

I am not interested in attempting the BIOS hack so it looks like I either wait around for IBM to release a driver for the INTEL 2915 card or just buy the following

Give up the A part of WIFI and spend $59 for the INTEL 2200BG
http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... logId=-840

Spend $99 for this one from IBM
IBM 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter ( 31P9701)
http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... &storeId=1

Or spend $65 for this one from IBM
IBM 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter II ( 73P4301)
http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... lCurrId=73

What exactly are the differences between the 2 IBM cards besides the price? The $99 one claims "Dual band access to 802.11a at 5GHz and 802.11b/g at 2.4GHz frequency ranges"

I'm not going to be a particularly demanding user and I am a cheap [censored] so I figure I'll just get the $65 dollar one and not dwell that I could have gotten an INTEL 2915 card for under $40.

Check the FAQ in my signature.

The Intel 2915 is the 73P4304. The 73P4301 is Atheros 5004X chip based (the $100 IBM is earlier Atheros chip). The 2915 and 5004X are roughly the same quality...

Hi, I am not able to find the 73P4304 on the IBM website also in another thread here it seems finding a thinkpad driver for the 2915 is "complicated".

Is it your understanding that the 2915 can be used directly in a thinkpad without having to do any bios hacking. (Official IBM Bios flash updating I am fine with)

Thanks
T41 2379 DJU

You must use a 2915 from IBM to avoid the hack. The T43s have two different wireless a/b/g cards. The Atheros 5004X one (73P4301) and the Intel 2915 one (73P4304). Call IBM sales regarding the 73P4304. If you are uncomforable about the drivers for the 2915 one, order the Atheros 5004X part which has been around for awhile and which other users on this forum have experience.
