my first thinkpad

(had in the past Compaq x1000,HP dv1000 and toshiba s70)

it's a 2668-71U

P-M 760 2Ghz
512M
14" SXGA+
ATI-X300
80G HS
Combo drive
Intel 11a/b/g
Modem/Blue
Finger Print

suppose to be shipped tomorrow - 5 days free shipping.

oroginally i thought on the 2668-4eu , but for $150 more i got double the HD and 2Ghz Vs 1.86Ghz.

i will upgrade the memory soon to 1G , and yeah i need a case for it

What the heck man... I just called to get info on the new R52 and to see about ordering and he told me it was going to be 4 to 6 weeks before they were available and wouldnt give me any pricing. I didnt even give him a model #

Seems like this is the second or third post on someone ordering the a new T series and they will be getting them shortly.

I have downloaded the Tabook to see the new models.
and the website also says they are available.

The new ThinkPad R52 is available with outstanding 3D graphics performance

and

The IBM Integrated Fingerprint Reader on select new ThinkPad T43 and T42 models can replace passwords with the tip of your finger

why do they tell you on the website they are available, but when you call they arent?
So whats up.. are they available?
or did I just got the wrong guy on a bad day?
or do you have to have an inside source to get one?

I have a 45 day wait for the T43p I ordered. Maybe IBM will surprise me and ship it sooner.

I finally decided to place the order for a T43 today. I was told two weeks to ship for this model. It has everything the T43p has except 2.13ghz cpu, Fire GL, and the extra ram which I can add later. The difference in performance between the two cpus is insignificant and since I don't do any CAD work the Fire GL video is useless too. The T43p I was told would not ship for 6 weeks. it's amazing how on every call to IBM you hear something else ....
i hope the laptops are made in a more Consistent way

For various spec, see the tabook.pdf (link to page is in the FAQ in my sig).

Pricing for Thinkpads is a bit like pricing for airlines. You have to look around for the good deal. Links to various discount sites are also in the FAQ. Like it says "Read before you buy and after."

i DID look in the TABOOK and there is no specific spec per machine number.

Finally after a complete weeks reseach ordered a t42 M3u for 1663(taxes included)

I spoke to Tony Morsillo(Rep) at IBM as advised in this forum.

CANT WAIT to start the banging;)

Each line at the top gives the machine number with the components (eg CPU, graphics, hard drive, Graphics Processing Unit, wireless, bluetooth (yes/no) and so on. In the bottom sections on the page are details explained. Hope this helps...

Yeah thats what I did, and then I called on Pricing and Availablity.. He said 4 to 6 weeks before they would be available (R series) , and wouldnt give me any pricing. I wasnt even able to give him a model number.
Had a R picked out and a T picked out and depending on price was going to go from there as to which one I was gonna get. But I didnt even get that far.

Why post on the website that "the new R52 is available" and then also "On select New t43 and t43 models"
If they arent available at all...

My experience when I called is that each different model had different build dates. As an example, if I chose the 2668-75U versus the 72U, it would have pushed my build date out an additional 3 weeks. The only difference is that the 75U has the Atheros chipset and my guess is that IBM does not have that item in stock yet. When I called I spoke to a gentleman named Rajeev at the Toronto call center. He was very patient and helpful and if you tell him what you're looking for I am sure he will do his best to help you. The Atheros based one is the same one they've been selling on the web for awhile as the mini-PCI II so it must be for some other reason.

Maybe there is a delay in building units with that chipset? Maybe they're updating drivers? ...but that is the only difference between the 2 machines and they're both priced the same

i only see 3 models on the EPP site and they're all XGA... how exactly did u order this t43 with sxga?.. and has anyone had any semi-conclusive battery and 3d card tests? i'm mostly interested in the x300 64mb and the 9600 64mb... thanks =] the FVU is under 1200 dollars now thats so [censored] tempting.... but for 400 more for fingerprint, more hard drive, faster processor, faster ram i guess i'm down...

Look up the model that you want in the tabook.pdf. Once you know the model you need to call them to place the order. Also, IBM has published battery data for each model in the above referenced pdf. In general it seems like the T43 consumes slightly more power than the T42. I believe for the model I purchased it is rated at 3.9 hours with the 6 cell battery and about 5.85 hoours with the 9 cell option.

Actually, the T43 266846U could be the best buy: See:

T43s take more power, but their battery holds about 10% more charge so expect T43s to run about the same length of time as the T42s.

Looks like I don't have any luck

My first T43 2668-84u (15" SXGA+) arrived a week ago had 1 dead pixel, returned it.

Ordered a new one 2668-93u (also 15" SXGA+), just arrived this morning. Found 2 dead pixels

. I'll have to return it again, and may be getting T43P with UXGA screen this tme.

And oh, speaking of luck, i'm going to Las Vegas today

They would keep their costs down if they demanded from their suppliers perfect displays.

imagine you just bought a new car, would you pay full price and accept a car with an inch long scratch on it?? well..... thinkpad buyers don't want an anoying dot taunting them from the middle of the screen every moment they are using their machine. Dead pixels drive me nuts as well and I'm wondering what the problem is, out of all my thinkpads, only the 570e had 1 dead pixel(bought it used nothing i could do)
