Recently I got the famous 161/163 failure warning from my TP 701C
To get a correct CMOS battery replacement for the lower board I had a look at the underside of an old spare DX2 board at the place of the soldered battery.
I checked the remaining voltage (abt 0.20 V) and polarity, and found the + (plus) to be at the right hand strip on the mobo just under the battery.
To-day I stripped the laptop and checked the voltage and polarity of the lower board, this being a DX4.
The voltage was low, as expected, but to my surprise I found the + (plus) on the lefthand side mobo strip.
Strange is n't it?
I attach a picture of the 2 boards and of the position of the battery.
Comments are most welcome.
Hans.

Edit (sept 25)
To-day I got a replacement buttoncell and soldered it to the DX4 lowerboard.
I thought it wise to replace the Standby battery at the upperboard as well.
The laptop is doing fine again on Windows98. No warnings any more.
