T41 or T42?

#1 Post by dg » Fri Mar 11, 2005 7:48 am

I have been thinking about replacing my 5 year old FIC notebook with a Thinkpad. I would like to have something a bit lighter than its 3.2 kg, and I suppose I shall need to upgrade to XP at some stage. A 14" screen seems the ideal size for me.

UK prices are considerably higher than US for IBM. I have just noticed some sites selling T41 2373 (TC12FUK) for about £850, which is just over half what they cost when they came out in 10/03. I presume that the reason is that the model is being discontinued.

The only disadvantages I can find are:
only has 802.11b, not g. Would this be noticeable on a home network in practice?
No "Rescue and recovery"? Does this matter when XP has system restore?

Do people think that this is a good deal, or are the T42's likely to also fall in price soon?

Thanks for any advice.
Danny

T41 for £850 is a bargain. There was a bloke on eBay selling them brand new (boxed) for £850 not long ago, is this the same deal you've seen?

802.11b is fine for home use. One of my ThinkPad's has the Cisco card inside and it runs perfectly fine.

Thanks for your reply Steve.

No, this isn't an eBay deal (at least, I haven't looked there). There are a few suppliers selling them at about this price, e.g. laptopsdirect, cec.co.uk, Toyes Computers.

Is it new and boxed, BUY IT. It is a veritable bargain. I have a T41 and just cannot express my love for this laptop.

I am becoming inclined to buy one now, but as ever I wonder whether other models will be coming available at low prices in the near future.

I should mention that this price is for probably the lowest spec T41, i.e.
1.4GHz Centrino
40GB HDD
14" XGA (1024 x 768)
256MB RAM (easily upgradeable, I know)
802.11b
3 yr warranty

I bought mine (2373-NG9), probably the most beefed-up T41 before T41P, new and boxed, and paid £1000. I live in Poland and there is a seller in Gdansk here who has a bunch of such offers. I think he has access to Nokia in Finland; the company has had large surplus of laptops recently and sells them away. The only drawback was Finnish keyboard layout, nothing a couple of stickers wouldn't fix.

T41 screen resolution

#7 Post by migo2137 » Tue Mar 15, 2005 10:18 am

How is the XGA (1024 x 768) resolution working for you? How does the 1400x look on a XGA screen?
Thinking of buying a T41 with 1024x768 res but I´m currently using T22 with 1400x res thats just perfect.
