T30 screen went Dark

#1 Post by vwmurph » Fri Mar 11, 2005 8:02 am

Last night when I unplugged my AC adapter the screen on my T30 (2366-JCU, 14.1 SXGA) went dark. I could faintly see images in the background. I tried plugging it back in, restarting and still could not get the screen to come back. I left it for the night and when I started it this morning all was well. Any one had this happen?? Thanks

Power management kicks in when AC is unplugged. Did you try the Fn key along with the brightness (up and down...also labeled Home/End, above the Backspace key) while on battery power?

Tried all of that, even on adapter power the screen was dark.

My old T20 would do this now and then. Eventually the backlight went to permanent reddish all over. IBM fixed it with a new backlight and inverter, if I remember correctly.

I agree with Marc_G, sounds like the backlight may have burned out.

The backlight is blown out .. my T30 did that this week .. if you can still see faint images under a bright light, look no further!

Is it normal for the backlight to come and go?

I just replaced the backlight on a T20 this week.
I bought it from http://www.lcdpart.com/doc/ccflmeasure.html
It is not for the feint hearted though, you need good soldering skills as the lamp comes with a 3/4 inch solid wire lead coming out of each end and you get to solder the wires from the old backlight onto it.
The upside is that it only cost $20.00 delivered for the lamp and it is very bright now. Refurbished inverters can be picked up on ebay for $15.00 delivered.
So if you are handy with a soldering iron and good at repair this can be fixed cheaply. 8)

Well it's not "normal" in the sense that it can happen often, but yes, it does happen. I mean the backlight is just a lightbulb in essense, they burn out from time to time.
