Backlight or Inverter Issue in my T61?

#1 Post by soyroca » Sun Sep 19, 2010 1:34 pm

Hello. I have a Lenovo T61 which was brought in the early 2008. Here are the specs:

CTO 6465
FRU: 42X4641
15.4" LCD (WSXGA+)
Resolution: 1680 x 1050

In the attached picture the brightness in the BIOS was set to high and in windows environment was set almost to the top.

In normal conditions you were supposedly able to be watching a white blank text document instead of this pinkish coloring background.

This issue date back from almost a year: firstly the display became progressively dimming away, very difficult to see. Then the pinkish coloring was more evident as you can see in the picture. And in the last week a little flickering was started. not very noticeable but still somewhat annoying.

I want to avoid to replace the entire screen since it was in perfect conditions (except for this issue). So I'm wondering if this could be an inverter problem rather than a backlight issue... I don't think so, but I need some confirmation before getting myself involve in the expensive process of ordering a replacement (Inverter, Backlight, or a full Display). I live overseas!

Thanks in advance.

It is the backlight (aka, CCFL). The inverter provides power to the backlight. If the inverter was the problem the backlight would remain off. Pink tint is typical for an fading backlight. It is possible to replace just the backlight but it involves taking the screen apart and the chance that you could cause some damage to it (rows or columns of dead pixels; dust getting inside).

Thanks, that was pretty clear.

Now I'm having one last question:
One seller is asking me if my backlight is about 334 mm, if so, that means that his item "can match completely", he says.

so... Any of you people has measured the backlight of this model of T61? I'm asking this because I don't want to disassemble my laptop twice in order to get a measure and the for replace it. (risking it all).

This is the CCFL you want: http://www.lcdparts.net/ccflDetail3D.as ... uctID=1697
They also operate under http://www.moniserv.com
AFAIK they ship international.
In my opinion they have the best and brightest CCFLs, I've bought many times from them.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
