Worth getting MiniPCI card or PCMCIA card?

#1 Post by pat » Fri Jun 11, 2004 1:55 pm

I don't know whether I should get a 802.11G wireless card for PCMCIA, or a combo card (MiniPCI b/g wireless, already have B).

Isn't G the new thing that's coming out and everyone's hopping on the bandwagon?

What should I do?

If you don't have a G access point, there is no need to upgrade. Also, if you don't have any other machines in your (home) network between which you need to transfer a lot of files, don't bother to upgrade. Your internet connection most likely is slower than B anyhow. IF you want to copy files wirelessly between different machines, upgrading to G makes sense, and then I would definitely get a mini-pci card, just to get rid of the annoying protruding antenna of a pcmcia card.

Yes, most of the time, our internet connection barely hit the old 10baseT on a LAN, not to mention the 1000/100 LAN.

802.11b's speed should more than suffice for most usage. Unless you are into online first-person gaming, which even then, you are prob limited by your ISP bandwidth.

Interestingly, my X30's 802.11b outperformed my friends' Dell Inspiron 8600 (802.11b as well) at a wifi spot yesterday.

For some reason unbeknowst to me and him, my X30 was screaming away while his system struted slowly on the internet.
