Can Access Connections be disabled without uninstalling it?

I've tried removing it from the startups using MSCONFIG, and confirmed the service is disabled, but the [censored] vampire won't die. I just want to try disabling it, and seeing if Vista can handle what I need all by itself, before I start uninstalling it.

But there don't seem to be any options to disable it, and removing it from the startups and services doesn't seem to phase it, contrary to advice on older web threads.

This is Access Connections build 5.62, either the latest or near it, under Vista Ultimate 32-bit.

Ever think of either Downgrading to XP-P or upgrading to Win7. That is what I would would, jmo.

Downgrading to No thank you. Upgrading to NT6.1? Again, no thank you. XP support is tombstoned, and the upgrade on Ultimate isn't reasonable.

I want to fix a few rough edges, not start over again with a new OS. And if I downgraded, it would take about four whole days to reinstall and groom all the apps. NO THANK YOU.

I just want to know if the applet can be disabled without uninstalling it.

You say you have already tried disabling it from running on start-up. This might not help at all, but maybe it will. Try using Startup Control Panel by Mike Lin. I have been using it for years, and I find it indispensible! I am positive that you can use it with your 32-bit edition of Windows.

You might open the Startup Control Panel and find the Access Connections entry disabled, or not present. But it still might be helpful. When you are sure Access Connections is not running, open Startup Control Panel. With it, you can examine all startup items, and run them all on demand. If you go through and run all of the items, you might find that a certain program is starting Acess Connections, even though Acc.Con. itself is not set to run on startup.

Interesting thought, but if the service is set to DISABLED rather than MANUAL, nothing else should (dirty word<G>) be able to lunach the service, right?

You might have a Thinkpad applet by IBM on your machine that can kill Access Connections right in its tracks.

It's actually included to stop it from interfering with program installations and upgrades, but there's no reason you can't put a shortcut to it on your desktop (as I have), or I suppose in your Startup folder.

It's called "killac.exe" and on my machine it's located at:

C:\IBMTOOLS\DRIVERS\WLLANINT\APPS\API\KILLAC.EXE

No IBMTOOLS folder here (Vista, T61P) and searching doesn't turn it up. Nothing similar in C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\Utilities which is where is might likely be.

I wanted to stop AC and test a few things. I finally gave up and uninstalled it. Doing an uninstall and reinstall is simple enough and fast. It is 100% effective. It will ask if you want to keep your profiles to reuse if you reinstall AC.
