X41 Tablet Cursor moves to corner and starts tapping -SOLVED
X41 Tablet Cursor moves to corner and starts tapping -SOLVED
I picked up a bare X41 Tablet a little while ago and just got around to playing with it. I don't have a stylus yet since I'm sure if this machine is a keeper.
Everything seems to work fine, but the cursor will randomly move to the lower right corner of the screen (where the time/date is) and start tapping as if I was controlling it with the stylus. This happens one or twice every few minutes. It's incredibly annoying.
Has anyone else has experienced this and is there a possible fix?

Thanks for the link Harry. This is my first X41 tablet and I did not know that there was such an update available! Will post an update after I give it a try.

Let us know how it works...I cannot get it to work with Windows 7. The DOS program will not work with Windows 7. Now to find a laptop that has a floppy drive and Windows 95.
It would be great if someone can find an easy way to install the fixes. It looks like the fix may only work with Windows XP?

The firmware should be OS independent, although the .exe installer and the MS hot fixes are made for Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. If you are running W7, you need to find a USB diskette drive. Look on EBay, they are good to have on hand for occasions just like this. I used one yesterday to flash the BIOS on a T41. I even got one with a nice case and I believe it cost me $15.billp117 wrote: It looks like the fix may only work with Windows XP?

I have one of the USB FDD somewhere, but can't seem to locate it at the moment.
I have Win7 running so I think that might be my problem with the executable. Right now I don't really want to wipe the drive because it was pulled from my NC2400 and the same install works in both machines.

Re: X41 Tablet Cursor moves to corner and starts tapping
Finally solved! Here's my solution for future reference. Hopefully it'll come in handy for the few X41 tablet owners that have this problem.
Original Problem: Mouse would move to corners and tap the screen as if I was using the stylus. Mostly happened at the lower right corner, but also occurred at all other corners at times. Just most noticeable when it clicked and opened up the time/date screen. Frequency of this happening increased with high CPU/GPU usage, but generally at least every 10-15 minutes.
Solution: Tried firmware updates with no luck. After much searching on the internet, I found that there are some other X41 tablet owners that have the same problem. This seemed to be a bigger problem with older generation NEC slate/tablets and I found a thread where someone mentioned that the unwanted mouse action was caused by electrical interference. I don't know the technicalities as to how the interference works, but the solution was to add shielding between the lid and panel. I used a sheet of heavy duty Reynolds aluminum foil cut to fit behind the panel. Did not cover the inverter portion because there were exposed components there. The hardest part was getting the bezel off the LCD assembly! After this, I used the X41 tablet for several hours last night without any problems. I'm almost certain the problem is fixed.

Took hours of searching to figure this out, but once I found the solution it was easy to find others with the same problem/resolution. Just Google the terms: NEC litepad aluminum foil

I thought the lid, or outer shell of the panel was Aluminum. If that was properly grounded to the lower case, there should be no need for extra shielding.
Either that, or the space aliens mistook your Thinkpad for your actual brain. Get out your Aluminum hat. Your brain is next.

The backside of the panel is white plastic, but there is aluminum trim on the right and left edges which have screw holes for mounting into the lid. Is that supposed to work as the grounding? Like I said, I'm not sure of the mechanics of the interference.
I have been using the X41 tablet without any more problems though! This problem seems to affect a very, very small number of X41 Tablets.
Now where did I leave my hat.....

Hi all!
Unbelieveable, but it works!I put a thin Al foil between the lid and the LCD-wacom unit, and the result is no more crazy cursor!
Thanks for the idea!
