Which Windows 7 video driver for ATI9000 graphics?

#1 Post by manteiv » Thu Sep 23, 2010 7:44 am

Is the ATI video driver for the 9000 available for Windows 7?

I could not find any, I am using the driver for the ATI 7500, it seems to work, is that ok?

If it works, what more can you ask for?

Video card drivers are in most cases not unique to a specific card or series.
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)

Did you try Windows Update? That's where I got the driver for my ATI 9600 for Windows 7.

Yes I tried Windows Update but it did not find any drivers for my ATI9000. Is the 9600 different from the 9000 or it uses the same driver?

Radeon 9600 is officially supported by W7 while Radeon 9000 is not.

The latter is incapable of full Aero, just like 7500.

Generic and modded drivers are all that's there for 7500/7800/9000.

Microsoft appears to have dropped XDDM graphics drivers from the Windows 7 disc, opting to promote the use of WDDM drivers. This means that a lot of pre-DX9 video cards aren't supported out of the box. However, many have found that the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 XDDM driver from the Windows Vista disc works with good results under Windows 7, without the Aero eye candy of course.

If you do not know how to access the driver on the Vista disc, you can Google "ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 XDDM driver" to find a reliable site to download it. Installing the driver is a manual process; you have to go into the Device Manager and select "Update Driver Software" under Display Adapters.

Or use the XP Video driver 1rd637 from IBM in XP compatibility mode. Works quite well.
