X31 Video/display issues

#1 Post by nicotean » Fri Sep 24, 2010 3:43 pm

Hello,

I just bought a x31 from ebay, but it has some horrible display issues :

When it powers up, either the display is messed up, like a mix of the screen (but you can discern the IBM logo), or the display has some vertical green stripes.
I tried connecting it to an external monitor, but the result is the same, so it must be the onboard GPU.

What can I do to fix this ? (or at least, what can I try ?)

Thanks in advance :)

It looks like a motherbord failure to me (perhaps, the ATI graphics chip getting unsoldered form the planar - it may be more common or publicized with T4x, but x31 seems not to be immune either). One way to fix it is to buy a new working motherboard; another option is to try resoldering the graphics chip to the motherboard, if you decide that it is worth doing. (For the second option, you may want to check a sticky on the Marketplace board.)

T60p 2007-A16 (C2D T7200, 2.5GiB RAM, 80GB SSD)
X31 2672-N7U (1.25GiB RAM, 100GB HDD, Atheros 802.11abg)
2x SL510 (2847-9UU & 2847-CZU) in the family

Ok, that is what I thought, thanks for confirming.
I will try to resolder the chip, because buying a new mobo is too expensive compared to the x31 condition.
