EXTERNAL HDD

#1 Post by alofano » Fri Oct 01, 2010 11:49 am

I am thinking of buying an external HDD for my T60 and don't know which of the three brands to buy. It is between Seagate, Western Digital, or Lacie. Is there one that you would recommend ? Thanks.
Current: T60 Type 1951-52U (COA XP-P)

Seagate would be my preference.

Had a 1TB WD. It was terrible, but my last one I never had a problem with it. I think the larger drives are more flaky. I moved onto the 1TB Toshiba Canvio, which has worked like a charm.

If I was forced to buy an external HDD and couldn't select the drive and enclosure? I'd have to go with Lacie (Hear good things about them) or WD (Good track record from my experience.)

I refuse to touch another Seagate after watching so many fail left and right.

Good idea ... which HDD and which enclosure would you get ?

Thanks

Fellows ThinkPadders, have a look at these old threads of mine: recommend external HDD enclosure and recommendations for portable external HD/external enclosure. They deal with 2 different cases, so you might find good info there :D

Cheers,

I decided to get a Seagate GoFlex 320GB.
Thanks for all your inputs.

If you planned on just using USB 2.0, then you can get a better deal on the non-"Flex" version, as they're being cleared out at Staples, Office Depot and other stores.

Your right, here in Montreal there seems to be a 10$ discount for no-flex. I felt brave this time and splurged (which doesn't happen to often). Thanks for the update.

Or...if you are a computer nut like most of us here are- you could have just got an enclosure (I got one from Fleabay) and tossed in an SATA hard drive you have lying around 8)

You must buy at least two of them immediately and leave them lying around. It feels good ... trust me on this ;).

Unused HDDs give me panick attacks, and after that my obsession will kick in and make me connect them to slots where they do not belong :P

So that's why I've been feeling so stressed lately! I found three un-used HDDs laying on my desk! That's not counting the one in my USB enclosure that I seldom use. Guess I need to stuff 'em into some of the Thinkpads that are just sitting here without a drive installed.
