T60 won't boot - possible dead fan
T60 won't boot - possible dead fan
Today I noticed a strange whirring noise. I think it was the fan. I shutdown the laptop, then removed the keyboard and used a vacuum cleaner to suck some of the dust out of the fan. Reinstalled keyboard and restarted laptop. Same noise, except now it stops after a couple of seconds and the laptop does not boot. I tried turning it on a few times, with same results. Boot screen comes up, fan (I think it's the fan and not the drive; I can't really feel any air blowing out of the vents like I usually can) makes a little noise, then stops, and machine shuts down.
Does this sound like a typical fan failure? Could it be something else? How can I diagnose the problem? I'm out of warranty, so I'll have to do any repair myself.
Thanks in advance for any info.

Don't want to sound picky, but shouldn't this be moved to the T6* forum?

I don't seem to be getting a fan error msg. Just the behavior I described earlier. Even without a fan error message, is it safe to assume the problem is the fan?

Re: T60 won't boot - possible dead fan
So many options on ebay. Does this seem like a good fan at a fair price?
http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-T60-T60P-41V993 ... 00472#shId
And from what I've read, it seems like it would be worth it to pick up some genuine Artic Silver 5 thermal paste instead of going with the paste the fan ships with.
All else being equal, I'd rather buy from a US-based seller than an Asia-based seller just so I can have my laptop up and running sooner.
Will I need anything else besides the fan and paste? Does the fan use torx screws? Thanks!

According to the HMM it would be FRU 41V9932. Provided your model number is right. Yours is a 15" Model with ATI graphics? I'm asking because if I search for 2007-FBG in the lenovo support site it says your model is a T60 and not a T60pgrektor wrote:Not really shore what fan to order do. In that case the FRU should be the right one, I would download the HMM from here and check page 168, that's where the FRU# is listed. I don't know if you can still order a fan directly from the Lenovo site.

Re: T60 won't boot - possible dead fan
Ok, I am jumping in on this one too. I have a moment of T60 fan confusion here.
It seems like all my Thinkpad fans are going bad this year. Earlier this year the T43, some weeks ago the T30, and now I think I can hear the same initial noise from the T60 fan as heard from the T43. I am only waiting for my mom to call and say that there is a weird noise coming from her T42..
So I went to the hardware manual to find what part# I need, but I didn't get any wiser. My machine is a 2007-CTO, and I found that two different fans are listed for it. 2007-CTO (Discrete) is listed with 'Thermal Device and Fan' part# both 41V9932 and 41W6407. The 2007-CTO numbers listed are followed by some 3 digit numbers (2Bx, 6Px, 6Qx, 6Rx, etc) but neither of these match anything I can find on my labels. Not the Product-ID, not the S/N.
I would appreciate if someone could give me an advice here, and also if you could point towards a specific eBay source that you know sell good "stuff". (ie. new fans, and not used ones.

Re: T60 won't boot - possible dead fan
CTO stands for Configure-to-order and are normally corporate machines where the hardware specs were specific.Norway Pad wrote:My machine is a 2007-CTO
If you go to your BIOS you should find your model number in the first screen, it will be a long number starting with 2007-, pick the 3 digits after the "-" and use it as reference to check the part number in the HMM. Note that an "x" is a wildcard. For example the 2Bx, includes all models starting with 2007-2B...
Another option to find the model number is to use Lenovo System Update, when you run it it's mentioned in one of the first screens if I remember correctly (don't have any Thinkpad around now)
I think the main difference in the fans would depend if you have integrated graphics (Intel) or not (ATI). Regarding the number of FRUs, I'm not 100% sure, but probably they're different because minor improvements on the parts.
Isn't Lenovo selling them?Norway Pad wrote:and also if you could point towards a specific eBay source that you know sell good "stuff"

Re: T60 won't boot - possible dead fan
Thank you for the help, I should have thought about looking in the BIOS..
My T43 and T60 are CTOs, as they are used corporate machines I have bought after the end of either a 2 or 3 year lease.
Anyway, the number in the BIOS starts out with the same number as the ProductID underneath the machine. 2007V3B. And I can't find a single T60 that has the 2007-V3B product ID. I wonder if I can indentify the old fan by looking at it. I am going to open up the laptop soon anyway since I need to change the TouchPad, so I can have a quick look then. If anyone else has any clue, I would be happy to hear.
It was mentioned somewhere in this thread that there was uncertainty whether Lenovo still sell this fans. But that's of course the best place to buy, so I will look into that too. I am in no hurry to buy this fan, as it's still just a "feeling" that is has a noise.

Re: T60 won't boot - possible dead fan
It's weird that your model number is not in the HMM, but it doesn't surprise me that you cannot find your type in the Lenovo site, I have the same case with my X60, which is also a CTO, but the model number cannot be find in the Lenovo site.
My guess is that still models 41V9932 and 41W6407 would be the right ones. A quick search in Ebay shows almost exactly the same foto, but of course this should be taken with a grain of salt. Maybe some more experienced users can share an experience here...
Good luck with the search!

Thanks, Tasurinchi.
Yes, it is kind of strange that it's not there. Well, if nothing else turns up, I will try to identify the fan when I open the T60 up.
