X61 Mystery Part

#1 Post by heyneman » Tue Oct 05, 2010 6:28 pm

I'm replacing the LCD on my X61. When I started to reassemble everything I found this part sitting loose on the motherboard where the LCD cable runs past the main fan. It didn't necessarily start there, but that's where it was when I noticed it. It's a little under 1" long and maybe 1/8" wide. Does anyone recognize what it is and where it goes?

Thanks

Do I win a prize if I get it right? I don't have an x61 right now that has the apart so I can look, but if my memory is right, it is a little spring that sits at the bottom of the lid and fits onto 2 little pins and holds the cable down, just before it leaves the lid. (behind the panel)

That metallic part is supposed to be stuck onto the LCD cable and acts as a kind of strain relief.
It stops the cable from sliding and pulling at a very critical jucntion point but if it's no longer stuck
on the cable then it does no good.
RichK is correct in that it fits into a couple of tabs just behind the black plastic piece that the LCD
cable passes through on its way behind the LCD itself.
I found the LCD cable to be extreamly fragile, especially if you have bluetooth so I'd try to
reattach it (with scotch tape for example). Also with this part off the hibernation/sleep sensor can
move around, in fact the whole LCD cable moves as the lid is opened and closed.

Thanks guys. I'll do my best to reattach it to the cable. Just out of curiosity, where is the hibernation/sleep sensor? located somewhere on the LCD cable I assume? Is there anything else that I should be concerned about not moving around?

Thanks again.

it is part of the inverter. There is also a tiny magnet on the lcd cable on a leg that sticks under the back of the palm rest, about 1/2" to the right of the main part of the cable. That triggers the switch on the inverter. It sits on a part of the cable that looks like a small "H". It plugs onto 2 small bumps
