Is-it true:2 smaller RAM is better than a single Larger one?

I have read somewhere that using 2 identical smaller RAM module is better than using a single large one?

My T60 currently has 2x512mb modules. I have an extra 1GB module. What would be the best thing to do? (I am running XP)

1- leave as is: 2x512MB
2- 1 GB in slot1 and 512MB in slot 2
3- 1 GB alone in slot1
4- I know the best would be to purchase another 1GB

About the only way that two smaller modules would be "better" than a single module of comparable size is if they are in dual-channel mode. And even then, the performance boost wouldn't be something that you'd readily notice. One possible drawback of using two modules over one is that they may consume more power (i.e., less battery time) but that depends upon the parts used on the module. My recommendation would be for option 2; 1.5GB of memory. It's better to have as much memory as possible for performance considerations. When you can afford it, then replace the 512MB with a 2GB module.

One advantage to a single chip is that sometimes, T60 machines can have a slot die. (I have one like that sitting right next to me, waiting for me to try to fix it) If you have a single chip, you can move to the other slot and get on with your life.
