Has anyone owned an X201 without any problems?
Has anyone owned an X201 without any problems?
I am considering buying one of these machines (which are quite pricey) but have read so many people moaning about problems eg. contrast changing, freezing of trackpad/keyboard etc etc. I understand that Lenovo must shift a large number of these machines so are these problems just a few unlucky people? Do other brands have similar problems?
Thoughts greatly welcome.

Relatively problem free. I have seen suddent brightness twice, some WIFI related BSODs and some CPU whine. The first two disappeared not sure why maybe some BIOS upgrade or other software upgrade. The CPU whine (morse code like sound) is a little annoying if you are sensitive to it. It seems to be possible to tweak it down by playing with power management options on their software.
I would still buy the machine as there is really no better alternative at its price point.

@u751920: Welcome to the forums!
My wife has an X201. It has run perfectly since she received it a few months ago. The machine is light and yet it is solidly built, its battery lasts ages, the screen is bright and clear. It has no faults at all.

No problems here but I immediately installed a larger hard drive and did a clean Win 7 load.

Re: Has anyone owned an X201 without any problems?
I picked up a dozen of them for our mobile sales force a year ago and they are excellent machines. Have had very little issues. In fact, I do not recall an incident involving a hardware issue with any of them.
I have been using one myself for about a year as my primary work machine with absolutely no issues.
These have 7,200 rpm drives, 2GB, P8700, Win7 Pro, WWAN option
Pretty good track record if you ask me

Re: Has anyone owned an X201 without any problems?
Im thinking of buying a X201 until I read about random shutdowns issues.
Re: Has anyone owned an X201 without any problems?
only had mine for just over a month but not a single problem,
seems solidly built, light, and performs well for size etc. I am sure some have problems the same as any computer but I can't imagine the majority do?

your 'research' is inadequate. <shrug> your loss...onesixty wrote:Im thinking of buying a X201 until I read about random shutdowns issues.
the x201 is probably lenovo's best ultra-portable to date and i've pretty much handled them all (with the exception of the x40 series). mine's has been rock-solid and i might even wind up getting a second one if the x201 refresh is undistinguished.

Re: Has anyone owned an X201 without any problems?
My only gripe about my X200 was it could get a bit noisy when it was not in low power mode, though I think this can vary some. I've heard others say there's are always quiet. My X200t with the LV CPU is much better in this regard.

Re: Has anyone owned an X201 without any problems?
I would wait for the "refresh" coming out soon (see a recent posting in www.thinkpads.com ). Alternatively wait for the refresh to come out and then purchase the X201 when the prices drop.
I have had both the X200s and the X201s and they are really solid. There had been a problem in the X201s that caused the display to sometimes dim when on battery but that was fixed with a BIOS update.
Still, I'd wait for the X201 refresh.
