Aftermarket AC 20V adapter that has a good plug design?

#1 Post by bhtooefr » Wed Oct 13, 2010 8:10 pm

One thing that I've noticed with ThinkPads is that power adapters are consumables, due to the FREAKING ANNOYING plug design that wears out quickly, for some reason. I'm about ready to get my fourth power adapter in just over a year, although admittedly the last one was a knockoff, annoyingly. But, one was brand new, genuine Lenovo.

Has anyone made an aftermarket adapter that has a plug that doesn't fail prematurely? Gotta be 90W in my case, but 65W ones for reference will work, too.

What exactly wears out on the plug? Does it get too loose so that it doesn't make good contact with the laptop's socket? Or does the wire break?

Did you ever buy/try the replacement cable as mentioned by me in this thread? http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=78862

Yeah, I got that one, but the adapter was clicking, and only outputting 10 volts after I installed that cable.

Maybe you did not install it correctly?
Can't imagine them selling cables that don't work, or "absorb" voltage...

What on earth are you doing to your adapters that causes them to die so quickly‽

The adapter I received with my X61s is still every bit as good as when I got it, and it's about two years old now....

I do suspect that the adapter in question was damaged, though.

The problem with replacing the cable is, the case is ultrasonically welded together, so it takes a ridiculous amount of time to get the thing cut open.

As for why my cables go bad... I use ThinkPads on my lap. Still, other power adapters don't do this to me.

Odd. I use my ThinkPads on my lap, my desk, balanced on suitcases in airports with the power adapter stretched to reach inconveniently-placed outlets, etc. Guess I'm just lucky. :??:

In my last trip abroad power adapter died. It was my own fault. I was looking like dum as* when the electric was flickering and pretending it wont kill my power adapter. Of course it did. Next time I will have two power adapters with me and I use UK-plug as there is inside a fuse that dies first. (I have not investigated this, probably so).
And next time I will ask around if the power is stable too. Otherwise I trust that Lenovo power adapters will last long.
